Why does he like licking this ball so much?

My Ddog loves licking this ball he has. Usually he destroys toys, except balls (although he loves pulling the felt off tennis balls). He does still play with this toy normally but at a bit of down time, he will lie and lick the jaggy outside bits. He can do this for ages!

Is it a texture thing? Should I be worried? He doesn't do this with anything else.

This was so not the question I was expecting in light of the thread title.

Lol, joking aside, one of our labs licks his forearm or the settee fabric quite regularly. I asked the vet recently, and he said some dogs do it in a comfort way, like sucking a thumb.

Yeah, it sounds like a calming down thing. Our terrier does it too but it will be either my feet/legs or his own feet. He will do it when he has been excited and is trying to settle later. I see/hear about it a lot so I wouldn't worry. The only time it can become a problem is if they lick themselves too much and make things sore. So it is good it is a toy that is his focus.
