How many hours is your dog in a crate at night?

My dog is 10 months old and is peeing at night in my kitchen. I know he can go all night without going as he has done so many times but it is hit and miss. I have always had dogs that were totally house trained and I just dont get it with this little fella. I have tried it all. I know he did a pee outside at 11.45 last night but when I came down at 7.30 this morning he had already gone again.

He had a crate for his first 6 months that was used as a bed/quiet area for him that he slept in but with the door open (mistake number one). We put it away after holidays when he just slept in his bed. I have taken it back out now as I am going to try putting him in with the door closed at night!!

So my question is...how long can I expect him to stay in it and hold his pee?? Is 8-8.5 hours expecting too much?? Cant face the cleaning up of wee each morning any longer.

Hi all. Thanks for all the advice. Just to let reply to a few questions. Dog is a cross between a Maltese and a Jack Russell. He is really small. Re the cleaning up...I couldnt do it any better as mentioned previously. Cleaned up, disinfected and a final clean with bio detergent.

I havent gone with the closed crate (yet). He is sleeping in his normal area which isnt the crate. For the last four nights I have got up in middle of night between 3 and 4 oclock and let him out. He pees and then back into bed so all dry in the morning.

Just wondering how long I will have to do this for as it isnt an ideal situation. Fingers crossed maturity kicks in soon Smile

Mine goes 8-10 hours in his crate. If he sleeps on my bed, he'll go even longer!

Like another person said, he wakes up and goes straight back in there after saying hello to me. He sleeps in there most of the time when the door is open.

My dog won't settle at night anywhere apart from his crate and with the door locked. He paces up and down even if given the option of sleeping on my bed. Eventually I get fed up and take him back down.
