Dog v cat

Does anyone have any tips on how to calm a dog when it's near a cat? We have had a cat for 4 yrs and at the weekend got a lovely little staffie rescue, who has apparently lived with cats before.

So far any encounters have only not ended in disaster because we keep hold of the dog, and the cat has only ventured inside two or three times. The dog is most definitely too interested in the cat and gets a rather wicked smile on her face when the cat is around, trying to rush up growling. Any suggestions? We've managed to distract the dog, but haven't managed to calm her down. Thanks

Time works best.

We got a rescue a month ago, we have two cats and two big dogs that are fine together. New dog is a terrier and hurtled after the cats at every chance. We put a stair gate up so the cats can have space. We then kept telling Nelly (the new) to stay or no when the cats appeared. Gradually it's working. The other night it got cold and Nell was on a chair with me the female cat decided to claim her territory back... I was over the moon, then half an hour later Nelly chased the cat! I think it will all be sorted once the fire gets lit!
