I have a JRT,she is now 18 years old.
She has deteriorated over the past couple of weeks, although has been weak(but not specifically ill)over the past 6-9 months.
She is very, very thin, and virtually blind & deaf.
But she is still mobile, manages to make it outside 50% of the time to wee/poo,but struggles due to her sight & arthritis.
Her appetite has diminished,as in,last week she was managing one meal a day,but now she refuses treats & probably eats about 2 tablespoons of sardines. She drinks ALOT of water.I am sure she has dementia too,due to her behaviour.
She doesn't whine,so I presume she is not in pain.
We have been to the vets about 4 times in the past 6 months, the last time(3 weeks ago),she was weighed & had lost quite a bit of weight & we were given tablets to encourage her to eat.
She is my baby,I have had her since she was a tiny puppy,we have been through so much together & I know it is ultimately,my decision, but I am really struggling with it.I am worried about living with the regret of making this massive decision or do I just leave her and wait for the inevitable to happen(but if I do that, how do I know shes not suffering?)
It is heartbreaking.
I am taking her to the vets tomorrow,so they can check her over again.
Have any of you lovely people been in this very difficult situation,I would value your advice.

Oh chickens, it really does sound like she was ready to just close her eyes and go to sleep. I have no doubt from your posts that she will have had a lovely life and that her last moments were spent with people who loved her so much they were able to put what was best for her before their own sadness. Well done you, not everyone can be so brave.

Oh well done. You did it - you gave her the passing she deserved. I just hope I have your bravery when the time comes for my 2 aged JRTs.

Now take time to sob loads until you can remember the good times Flowers

It is one of the hardest things we have to do for our pets isn't it? She was ready though and it was a brave thing to do. Our lovely old Lab went almost 18 months ago but I still cry when I remember our final journey to the vets together, even my stoic 22 year old son cried like a baby when we lost him.

You are a wonderful, brave and caring person. Your girl will be in your heart forever Flowers

My thoughts are with you. In the last two months we have had to deal with our cat being poisoned, and our lovely lab, who wasn't even five, having a blocked bowel.

We made the hardest decision with the lab, because technically they could have saved him with surgery, but there was a huge chance of infection, and if he pulled through, it was a matter of time before it happened again. And then, again, we could pay for further surgery, with greater chance of infection, which he could pull through, until the next time - repeat until dead dog.

I'm really not trying to make this about me, my point is that you are thinking of your lovely girl, the same way we were thinking of our gorgeous boy. It was the hardest thing we ever did, saying goodbye to him, but we knew it was inevitable. He would have got a few more walks, a few more treats, and a lot more cuddles. But that would have been for us, not him.

I'm in tears even typing this because my heart says we let him down by not grabbing any chance for him, but the outcome would have been the same, at some point, but with him going through more and more surgery with diminishing odds each time.

I did the kindest thing. You did the kindest thing. Big Hugs, I know how hard it is.
