Reputable rescues in Scotland / Northern England?

We lost our beloved old boy two weeks ago. The house seems so quiet without him and although we're not ready to get another dog yet I'm sure we will at some stage. Our old boy was a rescue and if we ever got another dog we'd love another rescue. However the local rescues (central Scotland) either won't re home to homes with children or just don't seem to have the type of dog we'd prefer (a mutt, basically). I've looked into 2 rescues - Many Tears and Heathlands - which seem to have the kinds of dogs we'd consider but they are very far away from us. Does anyone know of any similar rescues located in either Scotland or the North of England?

We got our first dog from the Edinburgh Cat and Dog Home. It was about 27 years ago, but ds1 was about 18 months and the mongrel terrier dog was about 16 weeks. They asked if someone would be around most of the day (yes) and if we had a garden, I think, but didn't actually do a home visit.

Things may well have changed, of course.

Actually, I just had a look at their website, they don't say anything about excluding young dc (though they do mention that's an issue you should consider, do you have time, space etc). The dogs on the site are mainly crossbreeds, with staffies and labs featuring strongly, in common with every other rescue in the country. :(

Thanks, Hirples. I'll check them out. Staffies aren't for us which is part of the problem. I know lots of people love them but I've had some bad experiences with them so they're not for us and, unfortunately, the rescues near us have little else.

I've only had good experiences with staffies, I just don't like the way they look. Blush Shallow of me I know, but I love a shaggy dog although not so much when they moult If you're not too far from Edinburgh, it would be well worth a visit to them, there will be many more dogs than those on the website and they're (the staff) very friendly and open.

It is desperately sad that so many staffie are in rescue. Another 12-18 months and it'll be the currently fashionable huskies/malamute/wolfdogs etc. Makes me Angry

Local rescues to us, although many staffies of course!
