I had to say goodnight :(

A few hours ago, I had to make a horrendous decision to euthanise my darling pooch of 10 years due to enormous unexpected complications with a common operation. I feel completely inconsolable as I didn't even get to say goodbye. She was undergoing surgery when I had to say goodbye over the phone. I could hear her heartbeat on the monitor. I just want to talk about my grief as its so overwhelming

She was a patterdale terrier and so, so sweet and silly. She did such strange and funny things and I miss them all at once. She acted like a puppy right up until a day ago. I'm trying so hard to think about the good things but I'm just so shocked

I'm so sorry, it's really hard to go through. When we said goodbye to our dog we spent that night drinking and looking at photos of her. Hope you can get over the shock Flowers

Oh no, I'm so sorry, biggest hugs peach. Our DDog #1 left us in December 2013, still feels so raw sometimes and every night we still say goodnight to him. We've invented a life for him up in heaven, he has a job helping God sort glory (he has a special pair of gloves he wears for this, you can't handle glory with bare hands now can you Grin ) and sometimes he get to answer the phone (if you can imagine "Dog speaking" in a Morgan Freeman God-ish voice. Of course this has only come about some months after his passing, the first few months it was horrid.

We did the same Sewing, lots of wine mixed with tears, both happy and sad, as we went through photos. Then more wine, tears, photos...

Peach, thinking about you. Your girl sounded gorgeous. Be very gentle with yourself. Losing a loved pet is so very hard on the heart.

We lost our dog on 23rd July so I understand some of what you must be feeling.

It's so hard to let them go isn't it, we lost our faithful old Lab last June and I miss him lots but can think about him with more smiles than tears these days.

Your dog sound like a real character peach, so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your kind words everybody Flowers It has been a strange and lonely first day without her in the house but I've been looking at all her things and thinking about how much joy she brought to everyone's lives. I just wish I knew that the last time I saw her really would've been the last time

I'm so very sorry. You are quite naturally heartbroken and you need to grieve for your lovely dog.
I'm not sure non-pet owners quite realise how devastating it is to lose one. The best and most loyal of friends, a pet really is a joy, a gift and a huge responsibility. It sounds like you made the right decision for yours and one day you'll feel proud of that.
In the meantime, all you can do is cry for her Flowers

It's the night times that are the worst. When I lock the doors I keep thinking I have to call on her in the garden. It's so hard to adjust. I feel so silly being this sad about it all but I don't want to deny myself feeling this way because I am hurting so much

It isn't remotely silly. Our dogs are much loved family members who are dependent upon us and become intimately woven into the fabric of our lives. So many of our habits are associated with our dogs, it's only natural that when we lose them it is shocking, and we feel lost and disorientated. The habits don't just disappear. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve, and don't for a moment think your feelings or the persistence of habits associated with your dog are silly, because they're not. Thank you Raia, it is comforting to know that people understand. I have just arranged for her to be cremated and I'm planning to take the ashes to the beach because that was her favourite place. She used to get so excited when I would take her there in the mornings that she wouldn't stay still to let me put the harness on her. So now she will be able to play there forever and swim and chase other dogs Star
