Puppy dry food.

Hi.

Me again.

Puppy came from breeders on Purina beta puppy food. He has this 3 times a day (13 weeks old).

Is this a good food to keep him on? Or should I slowly change it? I have had a look in the shops and there is so many to choose from I don't know what to do for the best!

Isn't Purina the one that been all over facebook recently because they are getting sued in America for the food causing internal bleeding in dogs (think they are Nestle), not sure if it was the Beta version.

have a look at the allaboutdogfood.co.uk website, it seems to be down just now, and see how they are rated (bet its low and I'm surprised a reputable breeder feeds that). It will also help you find a food that suits you.

We feed and recommend Millies Wolfheart (only available online, but delivery is free), they don't do a puppy food because their standard food is a high enough quality it has everything a puppy needs.

I'd second Millies Wolfheart. Our cocker has thrived since we moved him onto it at 12 weeks old. Great stuff.

The site is down, but google shows it rates Purina Beta Adult as 0.4 out of 5. Doesn't get much lower than that!

Watching this post with interest as our also 13 week old puppy came from breeder with purine beta puppy and I'm not all,that convinced it's any good for him as he has terrible wind and really runny and offensive poos.

I have been recommended Arden grange, but have had a good look at the website below and will be fazing out purine as soon as I can.

When we switched our lab to millies wolfheart the runny poos and wind literally disappeared within 3-4 days. He now does nice firm small poos that are very easy to pick up.

He's over two now and the only time he gets wind is when he's eaten something he shouldn't (usually something dead out on a walk, or when my mum sneaks him a 'treat')

Oh no! I'm not on Facebook so I wouldn't of seen that. I feel bad for feeding him it now. He has runny poos and terrible wind and thought it was normal for a puppy. I will look at changing it straight away. Thank you everyone. Will have a good look around.

Make sure with a change in food you do it over a few days - gradually increase the amount of new food as you decrease the Beta.

The right food for a puppy is one that they enjoy and are thriving on (and suits your budget). Mine are fed on grain free food and it suits them - I've tried really expensive, organic food and my food crazed papillon turned his nose up at it. The dustbin pit bull eats anything though!

Don't worry about it moo we've all been there, but thaankfully there is more info about dog food now than before, so do look at the website to see details of the foods, expensive is not always good. And sometimes expensive per bag works out cheaper per day as you feed less.

Hi.

Thank you both of you. I had a good look round and decided to try arden Grange. It has good reviews and was in my price bracket. So started today to slowly move him on to it. Would you take a week to change it?

Arden Grange is a really good food, so if your pup likes it he should do really well on it.

A week to change his food is a good timeline - just gradually change the proportions at each meal and you should be able to avoid any upset stomach issues v

I've changed from Purina Puppy to Royal Canin Golden Retriever 0-15 months. Big difference. Pup doesn't have runny poo now and not windy. Also, I think it's more filling somehow.

Eliza check Royal Canin's rating and ingredients out on the Allaboutdogfood site, its very expensive and gets a poor rating on its ingredients. You can get much better for your money.

I have not noticed much difference yet and his poos are still runny and he still stinks but he is still on both foods at the moment. Did you change your dog's food over the week Eliza?

My dog didn't do well on Royal Canin, really bad dry skin, poor nails - switched her to Millie's Wolfheart and haven't looked back. They are introducing their wet food range this month

I feed raw, but if you are going to continue with dry, read the reviews on the sites mentioned in the above posts, but also, just take a look at ingredients. Purina is full of cheap rubbish. Avoid heavy use of grains as dogs can't digest starch very well, avoid E numbers, check to see meat percentage, and is it all just meat 'meal' which can be any old toot scraped off the slaughterhouse floor. Millie's wolf heart, Acana, Orijen are probably the best. But consider a commercial raw food too such as Nutriment or Natural Instinct, just as easy, much better for a dogs digestion, and you get lovely small firm poops with little odour which are so easy to pick up!
