13 week old puppy biting.

Any advise much appreciated.

We have a 13 week old puppy. Would just like some help. If he is doing something wrong like biting the settee or dining room chairs and I tell him no and move him away from the item he is chewing he goes to bite/snap me. What should I do? If I try to pick him up to put him in his crate to calm down he bites me then. Do I ignore? Should I not pick him up? If I say no he ignores me and carries on chewing the item. Is this normal behaviour?
I'm just a little worried it will escalate. If I just move him from the item and not put him in crate he goes straight back to what he was doing like it's a game. I don't think I'm dealing with it properly.

Give him something that he should be chewing instead, and praise him for chewing that.

Whenever our puppy bit us we would yelp as another puppy would. We would also give his ear a nip back to recreate puppy play it was a training technique used from a puppy socialisation class we attended, this was 10yrs ago mind. Our dog always used to bite when he got excited so we premempted it by having a dog toy ready to put in his mouth. He very quickly learned that when he was in an excitable situation to go get his toy and did this for years, it was very cute. Writing this has made me realise he doesn't do this anymore, he's getting old

Yes I'd offer him something better to chew as well. It could be he's about to lose his baby teeth and his mouth is uncomfortable. Eric liked carrots from the freezer or wet rags frozen to chew on to soothe his gums.I think the trouble with "No" is that it is too general and so your puppy won't know what you mean. Leave it or drop it would probably work better and praise for going for the alternative chewy.

All of the above. Yelp like a puppy if he bites you, give him a chew toy instead and remove him from what he is doing again again and again if necessary. It gets a bit repetitive but luckily puppies do pick things up easier than children so he will learn quickly! Unlike my DC...

I have made more of an effort to distract him from the settee when he goes to bite it. I say no biting then distract him with a toy saying good boy. Last night he was on his bed chewing his toy so I gave him some treats telling him he was a good boy. It seems to happen before meals and when he gets too giddy. I'm trying to not lift him up or move him away as that makes him bite my hands.

We did the distraction method with other toys and it worked well on our pup. If though he got too excited and bitey, I would exclude him for a while by taking him into another room on his own. As a young pup he was always on a thin 'house lead'. That way you can remove him from the scene of the crime without upping the excitement. I didn't want to use the crate as then he would have negative associations.

Please don't bite him back, I know it's been done in the past but it's really not a good idea. You don't want to teach him that when a face is near it's likely to bite him because he will learn to defend himself if he thinks he's going to get a bite and that's when you'll end up with real problems
