Astronomical dog insurance

Just looking for some advice
We have a 7 year old cocker spaniel so far so good no health problems at all( fingers crossed)
Just had a renewal notice from john Lewis insurance which has jumped up to £1100 per year.
Is this the going rate?
I have looked on a co parison website and cover can be got for much less but will this cover any problems?
So confused about what all the different levels really mean, any advice very very welcome

As dogs age the premium will go up as you're more likely to use the policy. Basically policies fall into two categories life-term policies and the one year. Lifetime cover is where if your dog develops an illness, your policy will cover it from that instance til the remainder of its life. Whereas one year policies will only cover for 12 months. So if your dog develops a chronic illness that requires treatment for the rest of its, the one year policy will only cover for one year and you would have to pay after that. If you change insurer they will ask if your dog has any pre existing medical conditions which they usually do not cover.

If your dog has no medical issues, I would shop around. But there's no guarantee that the new insurer won't hike up the premium later on.

If your dog has not existing health conditions that would be excluded I would definitely shop around and get a better deal before your dog gets over the age of 8.

I have 9 and 2 year old Lurchers and they are both covered for life by PetPlan at £7,000 per year for less than £50.00 pcm. With PetPlan the premiums don't shoot up as much, but you are expected to pay a percentage of the cost of treatment, as well as your excess after the age of 8.

I did get a quote from pet plan that seems to offer the same level of cover for a couple of hundred less but perhaps I'm better to stay where I am.
