I know someone who a few months ago got his first puppy. Said puppy has now reached the age where he wants to hump things so his owner is buying a female dog because he 'needs a girlfriend' . I've said it would be cruel and unfair to do this, they'd breed a few times a year which is unethical when so many dogs are needing homes. I suggested neutering, he said 'I wouldn't want my balls cut off so it's not fair for him to have it done'. Sigh. What else can I say to try discourage him?

Thank you SmartAlec I'll forward them on! There's no breed to look up, both are 'designer' crossbreeds. Both something small and fluffy.

I'd make the point that if something goes wrong he'll be looking at vet fees of several thousand pounds.
That a bitch might have eight puppies - does he know eight people who will keep a dog responsibly for the next 15 years?
Has he had them healthchecked to ensure he's not breeding joint/eye problems etc?
He's essentially breeding mongrels - the market is flooded with designer crossbreeds so if he's thinking of financial gain he's going to be disappointed

Even if they're crosses they should be looking into the health tests required for all the breeds involved. So a "cavachon" needs all relevant tests for both CKCS and Bichons.

If either dog has CKCS in them it's vitally important that they research CM/syringomyelia. Its not only found in CKCSs but in other small breeds which are often used for cross breeding. Any breed/cross that has the potential to be affected should have an MRI prior to being bred. Heart problems would also be a concern.

I think that's a pretty forlorn hope Cheerful. He sound like a complete idiot.

What does he think is going to happen after the bitch has had the first litter. Does he think the dogs will settle down in domestic harmony and bring up their pups or is he intending to let them go on breeding non stop so his dog's humping needs are met?

Tell him to get the dog a soft toy to hump. The dog will be just as happy with that and it'll mean several fewer puppies being added to the thousands of dogs already in rescues.
