new puppy very stressed

Hello I just brought home a new miniature dachshund puppy, he was born in mid-march so is a bit older than most puppies but he is very stressed - he cried all night and has been sick about 10 times since 11pm - I have an emergency sppt with the vet to make sure he is OK but the breeder thinks it is nerves.
We crated him in the kitchen with radio on, hot water bottle in crate but he messed his crate so often we ran out of bedding - we aren't sure if he is crying to toilet or to be with us, when we took him outside he just ran about and didn't pee but then peed in the crate and then on the kitchen floor (6 pees + 3-4 sicks). I feel terrible just leaving him, not sure what to do!

Any advice welcome - I am planning to set my alarm and go in every 4 hours tonight to offer him the toilet.

Should I keep him in a closed crate or open the crate but close kitchen? How can I respond to legitimate toileting whines but not make him think whining will get him out of the crate?

Put the crate next to your bed so that he is reassured by your presence or if you don't want the crate upstairs sleep downstairs with the dog. Dh slept with Eric downstairs and by the end of the week he was happy in his bed (didn't use a crate) alone and no accidents from 11pm until 6am. He was just 9 weeks then.

He's just a baby- very scared in a new place away from his litter mates and mum. He has never been alone at night before or in a crate.

My dogs sleep in their basket by our bed, new pups have always settled quickly and you hear them wake for the toilet [mostly, lots of newspapers!]

If you don't want him upstairs, as said above, stay downstairs to sleep for the first few nights, until he knows he's home.

It might be worth asking the vet about Adaptil - it is a hormone product you can get as a spray, a diffuser or a collar, that helps to calm nervous or high strung dogs.

Has the breeder been keeping him in a crate ? if not then you can't just shut him in one and expect him to love it , you need to either put him ( and crate ) if that's how you want to go upstairs with you or someone needs to stay down with the dog , he's not whining to try and get you to do something ( they're not that bright) he is whining because he is upset / scared / lonely or a combination of all of those .

We let our pup have a good sniff round the crate and take himself in for a nap and then I slept downstairs by the crate for about four nights, I think it was, before he stopped whining at night and needing a midnight pee break. It can take a while for them to settle.

Nono, he's been in a crate for weeks at his breeder's but of course that was with his mum, his breeder told me he has been sleeping through the night (til 6amish). I will stay with him tonight to see if that helps - we did try that but it seemed to make him more upset that he could hear us/smell us and we weren't letting him out ifyswim.

the only times my puppy has been sick so far were on the 4 hour journey back from his breeder and when he went to stay overnight with my sister - he was literally homesick and it sounds like your little one is too - lots of cuddles if he'll accept them

we took it in turn to sleep downstairs next to his crate so we could reassure him if he woke up in a strange place - we kept the door open so we could stroke him while half asleep (us and him!)

It took 3-4 days and then he was sleeping through the night and has done every since

I couldn't let my puppy cry but I didn't want to give in. I put a blanket over the crate and sat alongside it in the dark he could just see my feet but I don't talk to him. The first night i watched something on the iPad turned right down. The second night I just sat there reading until he fell
Asleep. Took 15 minutes at the most. He is sleeping 11 until 5.30 I'm amazed! My crate is in the kitchen.

He does sound quite stressed though

Thanks for the advice everyone I had a friend over to see him and help me out yesterday who has 2 border terriers, one of whom is a 7 mth old pup and she advised the same as Wotsits, to have a wind-down period where I sat with him in the dark without talking, and it really helped. He did whine to be let out for a short while then settled down to sleep.

Crate is clean and dry and he seems happy as larry this morning, playing and running about all over the place. We even achieved a poo outside (I never thought I would be so happy to see dog pooing )
He's scarfed a meal and no sick since yesterday morning. He came from a small breeder's home with 3 kids and 4-5 other dogs so I think the transition was just very sharp to us with no kids or other dogs.

Aw, sweet puppy. It can be tough on them. I remember when we brought our little pug home, he was shaking with fear when I put him down on the kitchen floor (even though he'd been playing with my fingers during the drive back home). But in a couple of days he was happily settled and now he runs the house!
