Irish wolfhounds and "one day I'll have one" dogs

I'm in love. Was at a garden show thing today and there were two different ones. They were so beautiful and chilled and HUGE. I used to think my golden was big! It's really not practical for me to have one now but really hope to one day.

Any dog on your "one day I'll have one" list?

Sgtmajormummy our second dog was a Sheltie x Whippet and she was the sweetest natured little girl - didn't have it in her to snap at anyone/anything.

CandyApplyFudge we have also had a Belgian Terv cross, called Bear. Lost her two years ago to osteosarcoma and my heart is still broken.

minsmum · 06/06/2015 10:26

Any hound really
Dachshunds

QueefOfTheDamned · 06/06/2015 10:28

I so love a Wolfhound but the short life expectancy deters me...and that's speaking as a giant breed owner. I'd consider a Deerhound too as I think they're health and longevity is better.

My dream breed was always Newfoundlands and I eventully realised that dream. Sadly, we lost her to cancer aged 8 almost 2 years ago. I'll have another when the time is right. And I'm currently researching Tibetan Mastiffs with the plan to have one in the next few years.

QueefOfTheDamned · 06/06/2015 10:30

CandyApple, my friend has a gorgeous litter of Belgian Malinois at the minute. I think she has one still looking for a home. Just sayin' Wink

ememem84 · 06/06/2015 11:05

Beagle.
Or a choccie lab
Or a golden retriever.
Or a pomsky.

lampygirl · 06/06/2015 13:52

I'd love a Newfie. Or a Rottweiler. All the ones I know of both breeds are lovely.

We have a Bernese and she is gorgeous and a big baby, so we'd probably get another.

CatherineOfAbdomen · 06/06/2015 13:58

I am desperate for a Great Dane.

QueefOfTheDamned · 06/06/2015 14:53

Lampy, I had both a Newfie and a Rottie at the same time. Lost my dear old Rottie boy just 2 months ago. He was a rescue and never would have been my choice of breed but he was in an awful situation and badly needed a home. I actually took him in with the intention of finding him a more suitable home. Didn't take long to realise that he would be going nowhere. Fabulous dogs totally undeserving of their reputation.

Another cocker
Toller
Flat coat

Strokethefurrywall · 06/06/2015 16:21

Newfie - we live in the tropics tho so weather wouldn't be the kindest. That said we're near the beach so at least it could spend all it's time in the water. Total dream dog for me. DHs would be a Doberman or Rottie.
Currently have 2 humane society shepherd mixes right now so no more dogs until our boys go.
I'm sure we'd end up with a small fluffy thing next as we travel a lot and need to have a dog easy for other people to look after!

Hoppinggreen · 06/06/2015 17:00

heni we babysit a Toller and he's lovely. Such good manners.
Would love one but very rare.

Timeforabiscuit · 06/06/2015 17:04

I had a lurcher (wolfhound cross) he was the best dog ever and lived to a ripe old age - I'd have another in a heart beat!

CaTsMaMmA · 06/06/2015 17:10

I have my GSD boys!

I fell in love with those angry little Scotties when I saw them at the Commonwealth games....and have always liked Westies....so maybe a pair of them when I am too old and doddery for very long walks.

I would knit them clothes.

basildonbond · 06/06/2015 17:17

I have my dream dog so my dream would be a girl Toller puppy to go with my lovely boy Smile

QueefOfTheDamned · 06/06/2015 17:23

I met a guy walking a Scottie one day. I asked her name. 'Maggie' he said. 'Good Scottish name' says I. 'After Thatcher, actually', he continued, 'because they've a lot in common...this one's a warmongering old bitch too' Grin

hennipenni · 06/06/2015 17:31

Basildon/hopping I have my name down for a flatty due in 2 yrs time but would dearly love a toller, I know they are very rare so I'm just about to start the hunt for one that I would like to show at champ level

Cosmonautarian · 06/06/2015 17:44

My dream dog is an Italian greyhound too. However when our last dog died and it was time to choose a puppy it was my husbands turn to pick. Hence his dream dog choice our Pyrenean mountain dog. He's a fabulous dog but a huge amount of grooming and needs a lot of room.

Hoppinggreen · 06/06/2015 18:23

According to the KC website there is one litter of Tollers in the UK at the moment
Think it's in Devon? Dread to think how much they cost, DH can't get his head round paying for animals so don't know if we will ever get one as I might get him to agree to £500 ish but not more.
The lovely Toller boy we babysit does agility at crufts, he's both handsome and clever. The weekends we have him he just fits right in with us ( and sleeps on DD at night)

mistlethrush · 06/06/2015 18:26

I have a friend who has just got a Toller puppy - she's lovely. She had to go through a major vetting process before the breeder would consider letting her have a pup.

Dogwalks2 · 06/06/2015 18:29

I have 2 deerhounds a 10 year old and a 6 month h puppy both bitches.
They really are the most adorable pets, active outside and relaxed in the house. If any one wants to ask me a question on the breed please feel free.
My other dream dog would be a miniature Sausage dog from one extreme to the other.

Wolfiefan · 06/06/2015 18:31

I would love a wolfhound. Seriously contemplating it.

Tollers look gorgeous but I've never met one in the flesh!

CandyAppleFudge · 06/06/2015 18:32

Queen- I think dh might just leave me if we get anymore pets. Incredibly tempting though Shock

hoobypickypicky · 06/06/2015 18:37

A Newfoundland. There's one who lives down the road, a gentle giant.

An Afghan Hound. I like silly dogs.

An American Pit Bull Terrier. I dream of the day when politicians come to their senses, repeal the Dangerous Dogs Act and dispel the myth that Pitties are evil.

A Rottweiler. I love everything about them.

A pair of German Shepherds, one white, one black, both long coated.

This is laughable because I keep telling myself that I'm now getting too old to own big dogs and the next will be a Spaniel, a Stafford or a Tibetan Terrier. What do you call that thing where you want one thing and yet do another? Oh yeah. That's right.

Stupid.

jemstipp · 06/06/2015 18:37

I have three cairn terriers, a husky, a collie, a gsd and a yorkie mix. All great dogs.
