Which collar for tiny puppy who pulls?

She's only just 20 weeks and is a chihuahua cross so very tiny (and very wilful).

I am obviously following a training schedule and she does sit and has reasonable recall, except when she's on the lead where she just decides to go in the wrong direction.

I'm terrified of her injuring herself, she just has a normal leather collar and an extendable lead.

Would a harness be better? She only weighs about 2kg so it's not a problem with her pulling me, it's more me pulling her when she goes the wrong way.

Any advice welcome.

Try a Dog Games Perfect Fit harness.

I'd look at a harness - google found these specifically for Chihuahuas Smile.

I like halti-type head collars for my JRTs, but I didn't see any small enough for your puppy.

I think you are right about pulling on a collar damaging a dog's neck - see here. Dog Games also probably makes harnesses small enough. My two have that make and I like the fleece protection on the webbing, pricy but one of mine ending with rubbed raw "arm-pits" where webbing on another harness hurt him Sad.

Smile Cross post - great minds Lilcamper!

I would get a harness, I think a harness is better for dogs anyway but especially if they are prone to pulling

Can cause a collapsed trachea from a small dog pulling on the lead.

Definitely go with a harness and don't believe people who tell you they make a dog pull harder. Most dogs will pull on the lead until trained not to.

Extendible leads really should only be used with a harness.

sweetkitty · 30/05/2015 18:47

Second a perfect fit harness I'm sure they will do them for a chihuahua.

I absolutely hate extendi leads though, practise practise practise recall them practise some more.

A dog trainer was telling me about a chihuahua she met who had a choke collar on as recommended by another dog trainer for pulling ConfusedConfusedConfused

We use a cat Harness.

Get a harness my small chihuahua cross Jrt has one thats goes over his head and is made of fleece and soft webbing so as not to rub under his front legs.
Don't use a collar on small dogs it can cause damage to their treachea especially if they pull, and flexible leads should only really be used safely with a harness in case a dog runs the force when the lead goes tight could cause damage to the neck when using a collar.

LimeJellyHead · 31/05/2015 11:24

Harness for sure. I never walk any dog on a collar.

LadyFuckrington · 31/05/2015 11:44

Thanks all, have ordered a harness.
