How to transport Woody in the car.

I currently drive a Mini Countryman and when he was a puppy he was in a material type crate on the back
Seat (wedged in my the front seat) and then the boot. He outgrew the crate and has been in the boot with a dog bed. The bottom of the boot is much lower so he cannot see out and seems unhappy there now and has started chewing the fabric etc.
Shall I go back to the crate in the boot idea and just buy a bigger crate or go for the car harness and have him in the back seat?
To add to my difficulty in deciding, I've just ordered a new car which I won't get until October. In the new car the boot is bigger and higher so I think the crate in the boot will be the best option.
Opinions please. TIA

my dog goes in the back seat using a seatbelt clip that clips onto his harness

i wouldnt put him in the boot at all....but i had a nasty car crash a few years back that if the dog was in the boot he would have been killed so im paranoid about that
