What is wrong with my puppy?

For almost week now she's had really runny stools - I haven't changed her diet or anything...have been feeding rice and chicken and still runny. Phoned the vet after two days and she said that as long as there wasn't any blood and she was ok in herself to leave it a couple more days and then to come in...well it's now two days later - and obviously it's Sunday so the vet is closed, and she's still got v runny stools, and has just been sick. She is absolutely fine in herself, full of beans and aside from the poo issue seems normal. She's drinking lots...but I'm a bit worried. Should I just hang on until the morning, or would you phone the vet today?

(She's a 6 month old golden retriever, for context!)

Golden retrievers are prone to this I think. As she's been sick as well I would go to the vet tomorrow but as she's well in herself and drinking I would wait until then.

Hope she's better soon.

If she continues to vomit I would call the OOH , when you go to the vet take a stool sample with you . Also I do think that the advice now is to feed a dog it's normal diet when it is off colour . Hope she feels better soon .

Would just add that it is possible the rice and chicken isn't helping her runny stool.

I discovered, when it was the accepted treatment for diarrhoea in dogs, that my dog can't take too much rice/chicken as it seems to make the problem worse; I've since met other dog owners who say the same thing.

Definitely would be at the vets tomorrow at the latest; dogs have a wonderful way of covering up the fact that they're not feeling great.

Sometimes they can get an upset tummy if they've eaten too much. Have you checked the feeding guide for her age and weight?

We had very runny poos when we were feeding the full amount that was suggested on the food, we reduced the amount by about a third and she was fine. Keep an eye on the vomiting though.

Am off to the vets at 9....funnily enough it could be the eating too much thing - we've only just moved her onto 2 meals a day - perhaps she can't tolerate that yet? She hasn't vomited again which is good, but I'll be happy (but poorer!) once the vet has had a check up.

If you've moved her onto 2 meals it should be the same amount of food but split into the 2 meals so she shouldn't be eating more than she was before

It's the same amount of food yes, just split into two rather than three, so given what TheHoundsBitch said, I was wondering whether she couldn't cope with having two big portions rather than three smaller ones....

However, the vet was really pleased with her condition, said she's exactly the right weight and looks really well. She didn't have a temperature or anything so he's given me Procolin to put on her food for five days to see if that helps, and if not, we'll try something else.....Hills ID food for a while, and then if that fails, a stool sample (yuk!)

My dog is allergic to chicken. Was giving her chew sticks etc when a pup most contain chicken so she would get the runs. Would starve her then give chicken and rice which would make her worse.we soon worked out it was the chicken by process of elimination!

I don't think it's the chicken, SonceyDog - she's fed Canagan Chicken and up until last week has had perfectly healthy bowel movements!

I was thinking allergy too. Dogs can develop an allergy to a protein source that they are fed exclusively, and chicken is a common one. The fact that she's been ok up until now doesn't really mean anything.

This happened with my puppy too (she's 2 now). The vet gave me a paste that had some kind of charcoal or clay-type stuff in it to get any bad things out of her tummy and a week on bland food that they provided. We slowly reintroduced normal food and she's been fine since.

Be careful with that paste, vet gave it to us, within an hour of her having it we had to rush her to OOH vets with an allergic reaction...scary stuff. I'll see if I can find the name of it...
