Greyhound who uses the house as a toilet

My parents have just adopted a greyhound from the Dogs Trust. He is 20 months old. He is absolutely gorgeous and great with the grandchildren. He is a greedy boy and you can't leave anything on the worktops and he loves shoes.

They have always had dogs but never a greyhound. He has been in kennels all his life.

The issue is he is weeing in the house in the same place. He was pooing in the house but now will do it outside. They take him for long walks and he doesn't wee or poo.

Any idea how to get him to wee outside?

They need to make sure they've cleaned the area he's using with biological washing powder so he can't smell it at all. Then lots and lots of praise for going outside.

Thanks. They are cleaning with biological powder and then applying something they got from pets at home called urine eliminator. He is still going in exactly the same place in the hallway where it's away from everyone.

If he is from a kennel background then he will need house training in the same way as a puppy would ,but hopefully he will pick it up quicker.

if he's always been in kennels, then he won't have a sense of the difference between inside and outside, and won't be used to doing his business on a walk.

Just like if he was a tiny puppy he needs to be close to someone at all times (I'd suggest being in one room) and taken out very frequently to stand on a bit of grass. If he does wee, effusive praise and a high value food treat. If not, say nothing and try again in 15 minutes.

We just had a hell of a time house training our pup who came to us at 9 weeks from rescue.

She hated weeing or pooing in front of anyone so if you took her out and watched her - she wouldn't go. Yet I had to go with her as we have a caravan near our back window and I couldn't see round it to see what she was doing...

We think even at only 9 weeks something happened to her - maybe someone shouting at her, that turned her into a stealth wee-er/poo-er. She'd do it very quickly, indoors, if your back was turned for a second. She also never peed on a walk, ever however long we were out for. (She does now but still won't poo in front of us).

What worked in the end was consistent praise and a high value treat whenever she peed or poo'd outside. Now she wees then runs in and sits looking up at the fridge...

At 8 1/2 months she still has the odd accident but she tried to do all her pees indoors til she was 7 months! We were treating her before, too but it was hard to catch her peeing outside... The old teacher trick. "Catch em being good!" - pick dog's favourite thing in the world (in her case it is cheap Aldi's chicken) and ONLY give that treat for the toileting outside.

My problem was I am home all day and I was consistent but exhausted by the evening and needed someone to help me being just as consistent in the evening. Consistency is the thing.
