Garden plants

I've just bought a new house, and it comes with a lovely garden.

It's not my first dog, but it is my first garden.

I'm going to beef up the fences (my dog isn't a jumper anyway), then put a big gate across our alleyway (only way in or out of our property), and plant some borders. I've always wanted borders!

The plan is to dig a trench at the bottom of my fence, then drive road pins about 2ft down and fix the top to the fence, then plant things in the trench (not that I don't trust him, but accidents happen). But what plants do I put in? I was thinking some sort of vine or maybe a climbing rose to cover up the fence. Is that something that would do him harm if he started chewing? Can a novice gardener successfully grow something like that, even?

Any advice on things to grow and things to avoid would be appreciated.

Our dog doesn't tend to eat plants so I am a bit lax with the whole thing. What sort of style garden would you like to create ?

No advice about plants but if your dog is a digger do be careful with bulbs ,daffodil bulbs can be fatal .

The previous owners had a vegetable patch (seperate from the bit that will be fenced off). The rest is just a lawn.
It's a Yorkshire stone cottage if it helps. There isn't any privacy (the neighbours on both sides seem lovely but they can see everything). So something that covers up the fence and the trellis, but isn't too overbearing. Does that make sense?

Could i just ask are excelsior foxgloves safe around dogs ? i have some seedlings growing and want to plant them in the boarder in the garden but scared they will hurt my dog

Yes does make sense. I've just been googoing climbers. Think Japanese Quince and climbing roses would be safe. Things I hadn't really questioned before such as Honeysuckle and Clematis sound like maybe not a good idea.

Lots of different rones you can choose from depending on how much sun it will get.

Does the veg garden tempt you to have a go at something edible ? Soft fruits spring to mind as pretty easy. Haven'tHaven't googled but would think strawberries and raspberries are fine, Rhubarb is probably poisonous though.
