my dog keeps messing in my house

hi i have a staff. i have had him for about 2 years hes about 10 years old. hes an ace dog. the thing is over past couple of months he has started to mess in the house when left alone. even though we leave the back door open so he can get into the garden. any suggestions please thanks

Does he mess when you're with him in the house? If he doesn't, it may be anxiety. How long is he left for?

hes left for about an hour. hes been left loads before seems to be a recent problem...

If it's a new behaviour, I would have him checked by your vet.
