Introducing a dog to a cat

We're hoping to get a rescue dog. We have a cat who lived with dog previously, but hasn't for about 3 years.

How do you introduce them safely and kindly?

The dog is currently fostered with 3 dogs and several cats and just ignores the cats.

If the dog is used to cats I wouldn't worry. My dog was a puppy when we got our kittens and the kittens have put the dog in his place. One allows the dog to lick him and snuggles the dog and the other smacks him for invading her personal space (the size of her personal space varies depending on the mood she's in)
