What sort of dog?

We're looking to get a dog. We have 3 children (9, 7, 6), a cat (around 6 years old, who lived with a dog in the past but hasn't for around 3 years) and 4 chickens (securely penned).

Our requirements are that it can live happily with the above and will be good with other dogs when on walks.

We live in a fairly rural village, fields & streams within 3 minutes' walk and a 5 minute walk from our village centre. About 10 minutes by car from our local woods.

Thank you, I have looked but not touched, honest!

They are ALL gorgeous btw.
As soon as I can look after a dog that needs more exercise than a grey, I'll be all over a GSD/retriever/lab type dog and I have to get rid of allergic DH first

Temporary stair gates cat sanctuary measures going up this morning, then children to Mum and Dad's so we can set off -140 miles round trip. So worth it. We're being classed as a foster until we're happy he's right for us.

I'd really recommend Black Retriever X Rescue to anyone. So thorough but so efficient. Flowers

Oh I am so pleased for you ... and soooo jealous. He's such a gorgeous boy. Smile

Bubble2bubble · 10/05/2015 15:26

Oh lougle he looks fab! Well done you :)

PacificDogwood · 10/05/2015 15:41

Aw, he looks such a sweetie! Smile

Enjoy getting to know him better.

I am so impressed with how this thread developed - from 'wondering about what dog to get' to actually physically taken possession of a dog in 7 days flat Grin. The Power of MN, clearly.

Bubble2bubble · 10/05/2015 15:44

Likewise pacific I am still a bit shell shocked at how quickly this has happened.
When I posted the link last week I was actually fostering Trigger Grin

lougle · 10/05/2015 16:00

I've just finished his first walk. Harness with double end halti on both clips. Then long line over the top fields, then off-lead in bottom fields. All well until he saw a rat on a rope small terrier. His eyes narrowed, ears stiffened and legs readied. I closed my eyes and called him in my best 'here boy' voice and...he came Grin Then he dragged me we leisurely walked over to say hello.

Just now he managed to grab half a joint of beef off of my parents' worktop. 3 second rule and a trim of the end -all is good.

I saw Trigger on the Fb page and thought he was lovely but it's not the right time for us yet, was a bit tempted by Rolo as well.
When we are looking for our dog at the end of this year we will be checking out who Black Retriever x have got .
I'm so happy Trigger has found you Lougle

lougle · 11/05/2015 07:10

Thank you Smile

Trigger slept in the porch/utility room last night. He's used to sleeping in a kitchen, but still I was amazed how quickly he settled. 2 mins of low whining then fast asleep. This morning he's laying beside the bed and the cat (under the bed) has been rumbling. He has very good manners.

Before school walk went well! Getting there with the lead, a bit bemused by the clicker.

OP posts:
MehsMum · 11/05/2015 09:33

He'll work out the clicker, I'm sure: he sounds SUCH a lovely dog.

lougle · 11/05/2015 18:46

It's a hard life when you are watching the RAC man fix a car Grin

He looks very disinterested by proceedings! Grin
I hope it's not your car that needed fixing?

Also, I think I am rather mystified by clicker training myself… Blush

lougle · 11/05/2015 22:15

Yes, my car. It is very poorly. At least it survived long enough to pick Trigger up!

PacificDogwood · 11/05/2015 22:16

Poor car Sad

At least it kept it together when it really mattered Grin

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 11/05/2015 22:27

He is very beautiful!

lougle · 11/05/2015 22:38

Thank youSmile

PD it was very poorly before we got him, was resuscitated on Saturday then collapsed again this morning. It really was meant to be.

OP posts:
lougle · 13/05/2015 06:53

Ooh we have a hint of character arriving. Trigger dared to climb onto our bed for two minutes this morning!

OP posts:
lougle · 13/05/2015 19:46

Today we met some bulls in the field....all good. We then tested out the local stream -Trigger was very pleasedSmile
