What sort of dog?

lougle · 03/05/2015 13:10

We're looking to get a dog. We have 3 children (9, 7, 6), a cat (around 6 years old, who lived with a dog in the past but hasn't for around 3 years) and 4 chickens (securely penned).

Our requirements are that it can live happily with the above and will be good with other dogs when on walks.

We live in a fairly rural village, fields & streams within 3 minutes' walk and a 5 minute walk from our village centre. About 10 minutes by car from our local woods.

Found a video of Trigger now - he's lovely. Smile

Shouldn't have looked though - Jessie's story sounds so similar to my lovely girl's and I can't take on any more dogs at the moment. He sounds very happy in his foster home after such a hard life though.

Bubble2bubble · 05/05/2015 12:24

don't look Moose

moosemama · 05/05/2015 16:33

Ooo, I really shouldn't have looked!

lougle you have to go for Trigger - what an absolutely gorgeous lump of a dog! Grin

lougle · 05/05/2015 16:46

I have gone for Trigger, moose but I don't know if they think we're not suitable as I haven't had a reply to the questionnaire and they're advertising him on FB including a line that says 'we're looking to home him with another dog', which would rule us out Sad although DD2's answer was 'just get two dogs then Hmm!

She is beautiful moose. Well done you!

Tuppence, our first GSD, led me out from deep under some brambles when I was young. Mum couldn't get to me, so he rescued me. He would trot from the person at the front to the person at the behind all through walks, just keeping checks on the safety of us all.

What great dogs they are.

Aw, Trigger looks great (maybe you'll still here? A lot of the smaller rescues are totally run by volunteers who have day jobs etc and are not necessarily always on hand to reply immediately. Fingers crossed), but those little lurcher pups melted my heart Smile

I'll just stick with my one (very large 20 months old) puppy although they say the only thing easier than having one greyhound is havine two.

moosemama · 05/05/2015 17:10

They're probably just taking their time to read and vet all the questionnaires thoroughly. Often they're up to their eyeballs with dog care stuff during the day and only have time to read emails etc late at night, so don't give up hope just yet.

Pacific I have a 23 months old large Lurcher 'puppy'. He adores my older Lurcher, but I'm not sure the feeling is entirely mutual! Grin

lougle · 05/05/2015 17:14

Oh I hope so, PacificDogwood. I'm hoping that the person who got the email isn't the same person who posted his advert.....Blush

Just re-read Trigger's page as linked to above and it says they want someone with big dog or GSD experience, no mention of wanting a home with another resident dog.

lougle · 05/05/2015 21:42

It says "Trigger will do best in a home with big dog/GSD experience that can commit to some ongoing training. We are also looking for a home for Trigger with another dog as he loves them just SO much."

Ultimately, it's about what's best for him and they're best placed to know that. I'd love that to be us, though Grin

Doh, I re-read it too - how on earth did I miss that! Blush

moosemama · 05/05/2015 22:49

If Trigger doesn't work out - how about Katie?

Had a bit of a scan around at the rescues we looked at when we got Pip, but there seems to be a recurring theme of GSDs mostly being listed as not cat friendly. There are lots of breed specific rescues for GSDs if you Google, so it may be worth keeping an eye on some of them.

lougle · 06/05/2015 07:59

Thanks moose I've sent them an adoption form, too. Although I still love Trigger!

I've had an email....they think he might be a good match for us Grin I'm going to phone them tomorrow.

PacificDogwood · 06/05/2015 22:09

Yay! Grin
Fingers crossed for you - how exciting!

moosemama · 07/05/2015 09:51

Fantastic news!

Make sure you shoot straight back here and let us know how the phonecall goes! Grin

jgm · 07/05/2015 13:48

Good luck! If for some reason Trigger doesn't work out and you're still looking for a GSD I spotted this lovely boy here? www.rainrescue.co.uk/pet/harley-handsome-g-s-d-boy/

lougle · 07/05/2015 18:10

Well....phone chat went well. Just waiting to see if the rescue think we're the best match. I've heard that there may be another application so we'll see. Then it's just home check.

If we're deemed the right house, what's the best way of introducing a cat and a dog?

exWifebeginsat40 · 07/05/2015 18:18

another cheer for Rottweilers! awesome, clever, enormous lapdogs.

moosemama · 07/05/2015 19:23

Fingers crossed for you lougle. Really hope they let you have him.

Can't help with dog and cat introductions I'm afraid - dh is allergic to cats and our two are so daft they've so far failed to notice my PILs have one, even though it's always in the room with us when we visit. Confused

lougle · 08/05/2015 16:32

Home check at 6.30pm

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 08/05/2015 16:35

Fingers crossed for tonight, lougle Smile

If they are investing the time in to a home check, they want you to have him...

moosemama · 08/05/2015 17:51

Good luck.

lougle · 08/05/2015 18:54

I'm not sure how that went Confused DD1 was turning upside down on the sofa, DD3 was showing off and being a 'comedian', DD2 started hyperventilating because DD1 had her trainers on..... fabulous.

The lady was lovely but I'm not sure she will pass us. I'm so sad Sad

moosemama · 08/05/2015 19:32

Wait and see. Children get excited when someone new comes to the house, any sensible person would know that and not assume they're like that 24/7.

Don't give up hope.

Bubble2bubble · 08/05/2015 19:38

Honestly Lougle, they are much more interested in your garden fences than what your kids are doing at the time :)
