How can I get good photos of my black dog?

Seriously, she just looks like a blob - can't see enough detail in face and eyes etc. Can anyone help? This should probably be in a photography section, but wondered if anyone had found a solution in terms of finding a good backdrop?

You need to be outside! The secret to good photography is good light. I have some lovely photos of my black working cocker taken in Richmond Park.
