Recommendations for a shampoo for Labradors please

DDog is smelling riper than usual, I don't normally wash him as he doesn't usually roll in stuff so I don't have a shampoo in the house for him. Any recommendations for a shampoo to suit a labrador coat please?

To be honest, I use a variety. PetHead do one which smells of melons which is quite pleasant, and there's a Dog Trust rosemary scented shampoo in Waitrose which I've also bought. But mainly I use Fairy Liquid because I have a lab who is magnetically attracted to fox poo ...

I know you're not supposed to wash dogs often, or ever, but frankly, we have fox poo incidents a couple of times a week and he is NOT entering my house covered in that!!

I prefer something unscented. I always think a scented shampoo must be really strong to a dog!

P@H do quite a good variety I think.

I think you might be right, CupCakes - hadn't thought of that. It had occurred to me that he keeps rolling BECAUSE I keep washing him so he no longer smells like dog. Hmmmm, perhaps I need a re-think!

I only realised because I washed DDog 1 and Ddog 2 gave him a quick sniff and looked really repulsed! Hadn't occured to me before that.

TBH if mine wasn't doing it that often I think I'd just buy cheap wet wipes and then do a proper wash when he got really pongy!

I did buy some wipes, but fox poo is super sticky and doesn't get it off - and it works out really expensive because you need so many! I think I'll look out for something unscented and try that for a while. Or just stick with Fairy. I have to say that despite the frequent washes, he doesn't seem to be in the slightest bit itchy and his coat is lovely and shiny.

We use Dr Bronners liquid soap on our retriever it gets every bit of dirt out and doesn't leave residue at all.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 29/04/2015 11:33

I'll look that up, Barley. I think CupCakes may have had a valid point about smell though. Does it smell much??

Pets at Home sell Fox Poo Shampoo. My lab doesn't roll in poo, the only time he's ever been bathed was after a he went in a stinky stagnant pool and honked to high heaven. The shampoo worked really well and he smelled lovely after.

WeeMadArthur · 29/04/2015 12:28

Thanks for the suggestions, I might try wipes first as DDog is a martyr if you try and get him in the bath muddy puddles and stagnant ponds are fine though. No idea where the smell has come from, he hasnt rolled in anything, unless its his glands, but it doesnt smell bad enough to be that, he is just more doggy for some reason!

Could be that particular stagnant pond or muddy puddle?! ArseDog stank after his walk this morning, because he'd had a paddle in the nastiest, blackest, stinkiest, muddiest bog he could find. He didn't get a wash for that though because it tends to smell a bit less honky when he's dry. Honestly, we could walk in the Sahara and he'd still find dirty water to splash in. Angry Good thing I love him ...

If it's just a stronger version of the usual doggy smell it might be due to a build up of outer and undercoat. Labs shed even more than usual in the spring.
A good session with a Zoom Groom - at least half an hour for my lab although could go on longer as the fur keeps coming - gets out a huge amount. Best do it outside as the hairs float about and get everywhere.

He really loves it, must feel like a massage.
I tried a Furminater but he wasn't keen on that, and it didn't get out as much as the Zoom Groom.

Interesting ender I have noticed an increase in hair so will give him a blast with the brush tomorrow(I have a furminator and am in awe of any brush that can get more hair off than that!)

We use the animology range on ours. Smells lovely and we use the Stink Bomb spray in between baths.
