My dog nags me to death, does anyone else have a needy dog?

She whines and groans at me all the time. I don't get a minutes peace! She's ben walked, fed, but she wants attention all the time, either to be smoothed or cwtched up in a blanket along side me. She hates it if my attention is on the iPad or the tv! Here she is the monkey, I'm going to have to give in and fuss her!

Our new adoptee is just the same (not quite at the same level as yours but he whimpers if we put him outside on the terrace even just for a couple of minutes and always want to be next to us. I know it is early days as he has only been with us for under a fortnight but its like having a toddler in the house again! So cheekily watching this thread to see what people suggest!

laundryelf · 17/04/2015 19:25

Ahh, how could you not give that little one all the attention she wants. Smile My dog could be like this at times, give her lots of attention and she will eventually calm down. Its good for reducing your stress levels too!

Not helpful, but look at that demanding face! I bet she's got you well trained. Grin

Eric talks/demands too. He starts with the hard stare, then he whines until I offer him options and he barks to indicate his choice Hmm We have to keep him busy because he has the ability to drive us mad if he gets bored. It's a good job he's cute and I love him really.

Came on here for this very thing! My dog is very needy and whiny, today it's getting to me more than usual.

Any tips? Other than threatening to re-home

It's difficult isn't it? The more we walk and take him out, the more interaction/training he has, the more he seems to demand!

I thought he would at one point think "oh well, I've had enough for a bit now and settle down on a bed" but it doesn't seem to work like that at the moment (although he sleeps very well at night). He is permanently 'on alert' during the day. As I said before though, it is very early days, will probably take him six months or more to settle. Really want to see him settle for his sake though as I don't think permanent 'alert' is a very healthy state of mind for a dog to be in all the time.

Someone I could name, but won't, even wants to follow me to the toilet... Here she is in a rare moment of not demanding attention/affection!

My ddog is the same always wants to be sitting on me or snuggled up right next to me. He barks if I try to get up to do something and he feels he's not got my full attention.
Even follows me to the toilet lol, I call him my velcro dog but I wouldn't be without him. Lucky he's cute and so loving I can forgive his demands for attention.
Here he is sitting on the arm of the chair watching me.

Loki, I think our dogs were separated at birth. Mine sleeps with one eye open and if I so much as leave the room to go to the loo, she sits bolt upright - either wants to follow me, or sits, super-alert, til I return... She is such a light sleeper! Never had a dog like it. My last dog slept like a log.

First day alone with ddog and me today (without dh and dd) after two-week Easter holiday together. He is much, much quieter! Just sitting in his basket ... not even much interested in training treats. I am getting worried that he is too quiet now ...[bites nails]. Worrying that he is ill ... arrgh the joys (and anxieties!!) of new dog ownership!!

elmwoo · 20/04/2015 10:56

Lol, another clinger here, he won't get up til I get up, lies outside the bathroom door when I'm in there and is generally my living shadow

motmot · 21/04/2015 12:29

Our dog is very needy, but she's a needy affectionate, people-adoring breed (German pointer) so I expected it. I don't like dogs that don't want strokes and affection! The extreme restless following around and separation anxiety have settled down, that was due to being rehomed so much so I can't really blame her.

Steadycampaign · 21/04/2015 13:35

He's lovely Motmot (As is Nacho and all the dogs on here!) Do you mind me asking how long it took him to settle down? We've just adopted ours. He is already much more settled than he was on arrival, but not quite 'at ease' even with me on the floor above, and him downstairs. Daren't leave him completely alone yet!! (His previous owners left him alone for long, tortuous hours Sad and so we have to be very careful about how we handle this.)

chelle792 · 23/04/2015 16:47

I was having awful problems with my dog and OH when he was new on the scene. Dog was crazy about him. Just wouldn't leave him alone and was always pesting. I bought a book called.calm down fido. Havnt looked back, its amazing. The dog is so much more relaxed and calm. Hr basically gets rewards for being calm and chilled. Friends have noticed a massive difference in him when they see him too.

Ddog2 is my shadow - she sits and waits outside the shower for me, sits on my feet to get as close to me as she can. If she thinks I should feed or walk her, she stands on her hind legs and pokes my tummy with her front paws. If she knows I am going out without her, she is devastated and slinks around with her tail tucked between her legs. I like that I can make her happy just by being there.

Ddog1 is much more dignified in his affection.

GraysAnalogy · 23/04/2015 22:43

My adopted lad is the same. Had him for a few weeks but still can't get him sleep on his own, and when I'm playing on my phone he'll knock it out of my hand with his head so I give him attention.

I suspect it'll stop soon when he gains confidence and knows I'm not going to leave him like his old owners did.

GraysAnalogy · 23/04/2015 22:43

I can't even go for a pee without him barging the door down and trying to get on my knee.
