I think this is the end for my dog

She is two weeks shy of 13 years old and today her walking is so bad that she can barely get in and out of the house. She has had chronic arthritis for years and several leg injuries of varying severity so the fact she's still going is nothing short of miraculous. How do you cope with having a dog put down when they aren't ill as such?

We managed another month but she took a turn for the worse on Friday (sometimes can't stand without help) so the vet is coming out tomorrow morning to put her down. We still have to tell the children tonight so they can say goodbye tomorrow morning before they go to school.

She has had double rations of dog food and is out sunning herself in the garden right now. She has had a good life and when she ruptured her Achilles tendon 5.5 years ago we couldn't even have hoped for her to make it to 13 years old.

So sorry for you - be kind to yourselves and give it time Flowers

I'm so sorry Stuntnun - but glad that your lovely dog had 13.5 years of being loved and loving. When you think of all the mistreated and ignored dogs in the world yours had a good run.
Will be so hard for your DC but the dog will be a massive part of their childhood memories. It's one of the reasons we have dogs. Thanks

Thanks for all your kind thoughts. It's done now and it was peaceful and gentle for her.
