Crate training question

somewhatavoidant · 10/04/2015 08:19

My five month old pups sleep in a closed crate at night. My understanding was not to put water in there with them. They don't seem especially thirsty first thing. A visitor last week was appalled by the lack of water. Anyone with any crate experience?

You might just be better served by posting this in the dog house or whatever the section for dog owners is called!

Hi there somewhatavoidant - we're just going to move this over to 'The Doghouse' so you can get the best response.

My 14 month old lab is crated at night. She has no water in her cage, never has done. It's never done her any harm.

Mine doesn't get water after 10pm

I do the same as you and I too had a horrified visitor which upset me at first but like you my pup doesn't even go for water first thing when he comes out and he had no signs of dehydration and is good and healthy. tbh he sleeps through the night and had to be encouraged to have water in the day so I'm very confident he would totally ignore it if it was in there except to soul it everywhere and cause a mess so I am comfortable with my approach

Dogs should have access to drinking water at all times, even the RSPCA guidelines for dog welfare (which lets face it are pretty basic) say that dogs should always have access to water.

You get water bowls which hang from the side of the crate, that's what mine has.

Where did you get them tab? I had a look before and could only see ones for birds?

tabulahrasa · 10/04/2015 13:40

I'm pretty sure that's the one I have...but they sell them on ebay and on websites like pet planet...you get hook on ones like that or bolt on ones that look like a pita.

Big bird ones are the same thing.

Cheers tab I've just ordered myself one of those.

Apologies for posting on wrong board?? thanks for replies. I'll be leaving them out of the crate soon enough anyway.
