Best flooring for new pup

We're hoping to get a puppy in the summer and have started to clear out and prepare the house!
We are removing the tired old carpet from the dining room and want to replace with a more suitable covering.
I want to get engineered wood flooring but DH thinks a wood style laminate would be more practical - costs are pretty much the same. Can I ask for peoples views? What would you choose?

Our 2 year old lab is scared of hard floors so we need rugs everywhere we have laminate or tiles or he won't go in the room. Living room is carpet, we kept him out or very closely supervised while toilet training so he's never messed in there
