Acute Renal failure

Our daughter's pup- 21 months old , had to be rushed to the vet this morning. Sick, floppy, blue tongue, pale gums. Vet diagnosed acute renal failure, probably as a result of eating something poisonous. He seems to be recovering, and vet is keeping him overnight. The worry seems to be that there may be 'long term implications'. Does anyone have any experience of this?

ARF is very serious but is also treatable. The main long term concern is whether the kidneys have sustained damage. A degree of irreversible damage is not a problem because dogs can get by with less than half of their full kidney function. But once more than 75% of kidney function is lost (either due to further insults, or the process of ageing), they will then develop chronic renal failure. This is also manageable but isn't curable and will often be life limiting.

Many dogs who suffer from ARF go on to live essentially normal lives for many years :)

We have a very lucky wee boy! He is home unscathed and as far as they can see thee is no permanent damage. The vet reckoned if he had been an hour later in seeing him it would have been too late. Beware daffodil bulbs.

He's adorable!

You and your daughter must be feeling very relieved!

Such a relief. He is tired, but as cheeky as ever and hoovering down his food. Has scared us all though, and he will have to be watched like a hawk-he eats everything! According to the vet he 'glimpsed the other side '

I know I am a lucky boy. This is me with my mummy and daddy on their wedding day. I was a very proud pup.
