Two dogs; Boy and girl or could two boys work?

We are looking for a friend for our bereaved GSD x and, because the dog we lost was a female, we've been looking for a girlfriend for him.
But I've now seen a lovely boy that I'd like to go and visit- would it be okay to have two neutered males?
I've usually had a boy and a girl together, but once had two girls which was quite hard work.
If you have two dogs, what sexes are they and does it work well?

We have a male & female, we did foster but it never worked as the same gender would fight Hmm our male & female get on brilliantly though although he is very protective of her

We have 3 boys. They're fine together. Oldest one is grumpy but that's his age mostly

MyFeatheryHat · 17/03/2015 02:11

We've had a selection of boys, mostly entire as well. In all honesty we have never had an issue, though we do have occasional outbursts of "I can run faster than you" or " I will retrieve that bird faster than you" Not entirely sure that would be any different with two bitches or a M/F combo though.

I suspect it's more to do with breed and individual temperament than a simple "yes it will be fine" or "you must be mad"

Generally opposite sexes seem better together. We have one of each. The rescue the second one came from wouldn't re home two of the same sex. We often have DSS's dog from his mum's to stay. Our female is fine with him, but our male gets a bit territorial.

Take your original dog to meet the new dog and see how they get on?

It obviously depends on the individual personalities of the dogs but in general terms boy/girl pairs are usually easier. Ddog is usually very mild-mannered but will occasionally get a bit handbags at dawn with other boys and all his best friends are girls. When/if we get a second dog it will definitely be a girl

I've got two boys and it works but one's massive and the other's tiny and I think the big one has pup forbearance for the little one.

Meant to mention, I have known a couple people who have had horrendous problems with two bitches OTOH Confused

I have always had male entire dogs, my first two were brothers, then when one died we got a much younger entire dog and it worked very well. Have now got another entire dog after loosing the old boy, it's all about personality, you don't want two dominant dogs, mine have all been very laid back virtually horizontal dogs and are absolutely fine if we look after friends dogs too.

FiveHoursSleep · 17/03/2015 08:03

Our existing dog is a bit of a chameleon. If the other dog is laid back, then so is he but if he is handbags at dawn, he'll get in there too.
He plays with both dogs and bitches at the dog walkers.
So you are right, I need to go visiting!

I've got three but anyway. Two female and one male all intact.

Mother
Daughter
Imported "puppy"

Chattymummyhere · 19/03/2015 10:13

Posted too soon, they all get on great the females can become a bit bitchy when in season but we just keep a close eye and its never got bad yet.

LokiBuddyBoo1 · 19/03/2015 11:01

I thinking depends on not only the breed but the individual dogs. Me, my sister and father all got male dogs, they are all the same age mine is two months older than my sister and father's who are litter mates and they all get on great and they spend every day together. But they have know each other from 10 weeks old but they don't seem to get on with my other sisters dog but he's very dominanting an ott.
So I If I was you I would take your dog to meet any other dog you were thinking of getting to see if they like each other other.
