The more you do them the more they need doing. So only have them emptied when the dog is showing signs.

Thanks lone cat , he was sat next to me on the sofa, when he got up there was a patch of clear liquid. I'm assuming it was from his bottom. Should I take him to the vet?

A groomer might be cheaper than the vets

I could be a one off but if he continually has this issue then take a look at his diet.... are his poos firm? If their poo is continually too soft it can mean that the anal glands don't empty themselves naturally.

One of our dogs has had an issue with his all his life. Every month I empty them for him. Problem solved. It is quite easy, with practice and patience.

This may help, but as I say, only empty them if it turns out to be an ongoing issue www.dfordog.co.uk/article-empty-dog-anal-glands.html

Yuk! Dogs can be so gross! My mums little Pom has this problem and she found it improved when she changed to the expensive Lilly's Kitchen brand.

If you empty your dogs anal glands regularly yourself please ask your vet to check them at least annually when you have your dogs yearly vaccination and health check. Anal gland masses often go undetected and are often highly malignant and spread quickly and are part of the vets examination when they "empty" the glands. Increasing dietary fibre may help bulk out the stools which in turn may help the glands discharge more easily. The smell is a fishy/metallic foul and incredibly pungent odour which lasts for days! Yikes!
