We are all v excited, it'll be my first every puppy and so consequently don't know where to start. Obviously have read basic guides online, but please tell me any magic tips you think I should know! Grin

If you are taking your puppy home part vaccinated find out what vaccine is being used and that your own vet also uses that otherwise it will be a faff. (Personal experience)

What are you getting?

It's a lhasa apso crossed with a poodle, it's the only dog I've been close to that I haven't been allergic to. dh has had dogs before but not from a puppy, not since he was little himself. What's the best way to settle a new puppy into its new home? Keep him in the one room for a bit?

Our miniature schnauzer has only been with us since saturday and he's our first puppy so I am no expert at all but our pup has settled beautifully and we basically spent the weekend showering him with affection. He has a crate to sleep in which he has started taking himself off to for a nap, we put a blanket over it as a den for him. Breeder gave a blanket for us to bring home with him too which he uses like a pillow in bed.

That's all really, I think we got lucky because he is a very chilled out chap.

I have an 8 month old puppy, I would highly recommend stocking up on gin oh and cleaning supplies.

Lol florin do you know me? I've got tons of gin cause dh seems to think I drink it?!? was told today that puppy (we haven't chosen a name yet) will cry through the first night, how do I comfort him? its not as if he's a baby and I can give him milk Grin

he doesn't need to cry through the first night - we got our puppy a pet-safe hot water bottle thingy and can you give your breeder a blanket which they can put in with mum and pups so that he'll come home to you with something which smells familiar

We also took turns sleeping on the sofa downstairs next to the crate. He got up twice the first night for a wee, once the second night, after that there was a little bit of stirring but he settled back down again with a gentle 'shush' and by the end of the first week he was sleeping through until about 6:30

join the Dog Training Advice and Support facebook group - there's masses of stuff on there about raising puppies and the moderators are all qualified behaviourists so the advice on there is the best you can get

have you got yourself booked onto puppy classes yet? if not, have a look at a couple and choose one you like the look of - run a mile from anywhere that says you need to be dominant over your dog and talks about pack theory as that is outdated bunkum

oh and take lots and lots of photos - it's amazing how quickly they grow up
