Puppy vaccines

I brought my puppy home on Saturday at exactly 8 weeks having had his first vaccinations a few days early.

I was shown his first vaccination card with instructions for second in 2-4 weeks.

Being keen to get him out and about ASAP I went to the vets today to book his second set two weeks from the date of first and they took the info from the vaccination record and booked it in.

Since then I have seen stuff saying it is an absolute no no to have second vax before 10 weeks but the date booked in he would be 9 weeks 4 days. How strict is the 10 weeks? They didn't query his age when making the booking.

Also i have also now read that mixing vaccine brands can be a problem. Again, nothing was queried when I booked the second set but if she didnt spot the age problem then I'm worried she didn't know what she was doing with that either. I don't want to turn up at nearly 10 weeks and find he has to start all over again, I would rather start again now or find another vet if necessary.

I guess I need to call them but anyone here who can perhaps give me any words of wisdom from experience?

I thought you had to leave it for four weeks? That's news to me.

I read that having the first injections too early, before eight weeks, can mean that they don't take, and then you have to leave it for four weeks before the second. That means that you can't take them out and about much before 12 weeks. The problem with that is that they have a very small window of optimum socialisation, up until about 14 weeks, which can then be missed.

Or have I got that wrong?

Personally, I would modify the advice not to take them out until 12 weeks.

I would be taking the pup on buses, trains, cars, to stables, meeting kids, other people etc etc but carried, not on the ground.

Don't like the idea of keeping pups indoors until 10 to 12 weeks when the socialisation window closes around 12 and frankly, fearful dogs are a bloody nightmare and the longer you leave it to socialise the the more likely it if you'll have one.

They were def given at 7 weeks and 4 days and the record def says second in 2-4 weeks. It looks like its vanguard 7 if that makes any difference.

I will speak to vets tomorrow anyway but its now playing on my mind. Oh well.

It's awkward isn't it? I will want to take a new puppy out and about as much as I can but a heavy wriggly puppy is going to be difficult.

The puppy needs to be 10 weeks old at least before the second shot and this is due to the fact that maternal derived antibodies are still quite high prior to 10 weeks of age. Depending on the vaccine (they are all different) you may need a minimum of 4 weeks between the first and second shot. There is one that you can do part at 10 weeks and another part 4 weeks after the first.

So how soon can you have the first ones then? Not before eight weeks surely?

Anyhow, apparently vanguard 7 not used round these parts so have started again with first vaccine. Will get second at 10 weeks and 3 days so worked out ok in the end. Vet was very comfortable that starting the course again today with a different brand was perfectly safe.

Oh ok, thanks Shouldof. I'll have a word with the breeder and see what she says. If she's happpy to have them done at 6/7 weeks that would be great.

Just out of interest, how much are puppy vaccines where you are?

Ms, they still have to wait until 10 weeks for their second so not sure if there's an advantage having it done sooner. Think our breeder did them just before 8 weeks because we brought him home at 8 weeks exactly and she wanted them done before he left her.

Msad I would just speak to your own bet about it tbh the 6/7 weeks might be a us thing. I wish I had spoken to my own vet before we paid deposit etc because if I had I could have just tried to organise to bring him in for the full course with my own vet.
