Any vets out there? How do you cope when you have to PTS our beloved friends?

My wonderful lab was PTS a few weeks back. We were there with him when he went into his forever sleep. It was a horrible day and the pain of this memory will never go away.

Our vet was lovely throughout the process. It was clear they are real animal lovers and they shared our pain. I was so impressed with the way they interacted with us and our very poorly dog.

They even sent us a very touching handwritten card the following week... A very sweet touch. It must be very difficult for them.

Well it's the last thing we can do for them. Sometimes owners feel guilty and I say no, look, you're saving him, rescuing him from suffering. I admire owners who can take a deep breath and say yes, go for it - they go through the suffering so their pet doesn't have to. The pet is dying anyway we're just helping them to do it peacefully, quickly and among friends.

You do your best to honour them with a calm, relaxed dignified end.

Agreed- it's the last, kindest thing we can do, to help them go on their way as gently as we can.

Honestly, in answer to your question, I remember the dogs I've seen left to go on too long by their owners. That reminds me that what we're doing is kind and right.

It's still upsetting though. I think when it stops upsetting me it'll be time to give it up.
