Keeping your dog clean- help!

Have a fab and amazing 8month old border collie who we all love. Ever time she is off the lead she rolls or jumps in mud, poo or whatever yuck she can find. I have been putting her in shower but not sure if that good for her or not?? don't know

I work with an ex MOD dog handler. He advised me to only ever hose down a muddy dog, or better still, get them to take a swim before the end of a walk (never managed that one). Our springer is always the muddiest dog on the walk, but a quick hose and it falls off.

I have friends who use soap to wash their dogs regularly and you can see that the oils are stripped from their coat. With our dog the dirt just slips off and he dries quickly with a brisk rub of the towel.

Do u hose outside with cold water? She gets the poo n muck mainly around her neck from rolling and she honks constantly!!

I find this very effective: put a flask of warm water by the door, with a jug, j-cloth and two microfibre towels. Wipe the dog all over with damp j-cloth (drop of shampoo in the water), stand him on one towel and dry him off with another. Takes less than five minutes, and we both enjoy it, twice a day.

I have a fox poo roller. She needs a bath after rolling, full on scrub with soap.

I literally had to scrub dried lumps of poo off her today (again) from rolling. She had an attractive ring of yuck round her neck??

I have a border collie too.

I rough her up with a towel and keep her off the furniture until dry then comb out.

Poo, fortunately I don't have to deal with this one often but when I do....
Take dog into empty bath, completely douse in vinegar (yes really!) then ketchup. Keep dog confined for at least an hour while you tell it how disgusting it is and how cross you are.
Shampoo (I don't use dog, I use whatever's to hand) rinse and repeat until completely clean.
Put in solitary confinement somewhere to dry off, smell, and repeat if necessary.

I will need to try vinegar. Even after a wash she stinks!!!

Is the poo almost black and really slimy and liquid looking?
If so, that's what my dog likes to roll in sometimes and for that baby, believe me, you will NOT get the smell out without vinegar and ketchup.

It was so bad today when I put her lead on, I had to pick clumps of poo out the collar so I could get lead on!! It was brown and black and vile. She also jumps in the dirtiest muddiest ponds and seems to be happiest when covered in dung and muck

Hmm, maybe it's not the same.
The revolting slop my dog likes doesn't form clumps. Vom!

I feel your pain though.
I remember when I bought my dog a really expensive, really posh, rolled bridle leather collar, I lovingly washed it with saddle soap and polished it with leather balsam.
First day of use and the bitch rolled in the aforementioned slop!
I was FUMING.
Ended up soaking the collar in bleach (bad move), then soapy water, then scrubbing with sandpaper and it STILL smelt.
She still wears that collar now and it doesn't smell but it doesn't have the same lovely colour or shiny smooth texture anymore either.

Butthole, that sounds like fox poo!
