Is your dog a graser or a scoffer?

And what breed are they?

I have a JR and she's a graser, I think most terriers are.

Yes all my three are terriers and grazers.

They happily just trot over to the bowl for a little snack when they feel like it.

Mitzi50 · 17/02/2015 23:44

Since I've changed their diet both are scoffers - prior to that I struggled to get them to eat enough.

Florin · 18/02/2015 04:38

Scoffer- raw fed working cocker spaniel. You would think she hasn't been fed for days ans eats everything including green vegetables enthusiastically.

Arkkorox · 18/02/2015 04:59

Scoffer most certainly. Hence why she now has to eat her food out of a green feeder!!

Reggiesmom · 18/02/2015 09:15

scoffer eats anything and everything.

DunelmDoris · 18/02/2015 09:17

Dogs which graze are usually overweight. The reason they don't eat their whole bowl of food at once is because they are chronically overfed and so they aren't that hungry. It's unusual for a dog who is fed ad lib not to be fat by the time they reach middle age.

GemmaTeller · 18/02/2015 09:18

Boxers here,

Female will sometimes turn her nose up at a meal but eats nicely.

Male is a total scoffer and eats anything and everything.

fakenamefornow · 18/02/2015 09:27

Ah, Doris, I would have thought the opposite and the scoffers got fat. My dog is 13 and not fat, she's been weighed as well so I'm not just going by eye. Posters haven't mentioned breed, I had a theory that the grazers and scoffers divided by breed.

I should have added, my dog will scoff any thing she's stolen though.

My dog is a grazer, he's not overweight though. He's just not a foodie, unless the food which is being offered is really high value (stolen off a 3yo, in other words Hmm )

Scoffer - lab x collie
Grazer ( but now has to scoff so the other dog doesn't eat it ) -SBT

Seriously, ask any vet or VN - it's a classic story.

Vet: "Rover's a bit on the heavy side, just to make you aware, perhaps it would be a good idea to cut down the size of his meals."
Owner: Shock "Do you think so? He doesn't eat much!"
Vet: "Yes, I do. You'll notice that if you run your hand down his side, you have to press hard to feel his ribs. This is an indication that he's overweight."
Owner: "But he really doesn't eat much!"
Vet: "How is he fed?"
Owner: "He only gets one bowl of food, he doesn't eat it all at once, he just picks at it all day - he can't be fat!"
Vet: "I'm afraid he is though. I can't feel or see any ribs. This could cause health problems. Have you thought about restricting him to set meals?'
Owner: "But he's fussy. He won't eat his food without me mixing it with a bit of roast beef. He's not a greedy dog!"
Vet:
Owner: "Should we weigh him to check?"
Vet: "Certainly, but we can tell that he's overweight without the scales."
Owner: "Because he doesn't eat much ..."

Eric's a scoffer now he is raw fed, he doesn't leave the bowl until it's all gone. When he had dry food he was picky and a grazer if he had the chance but I'd pick up his bowl after 20 minutes.

insanityscratching · 18/02/2015 09:43

Forgot to add Eric's a poodle shih tzu cross.

averylongtimeago · 18/02/2015 09:58

DunelmDoris, that sounds exactly like one of the many conversations my Mil had with her vet about her spaniels - known to the rest of the family as "Barrel and Cask".

Oh, and all my Goldens have been scoffers - the only way to keep them slim is to measure their food....they would actually eat till they burst!

OttiliaVonBCup · 18/02/2015 10:01

Speaking of graders and scoffers

ClaimedByMe · 18/02/2015 10:02

Our staffy is a overweight scoffer

Mitzi50 · 18/02/2015 10:09

averylongtimeago your post made me think of my old lab - she would eat everything and anything and was ingenious about getting to food. When my FIL was house sitting, he forgot to lock the door where the dog food was kept. When he came down in the morning she had eaten most of a 15 kg bag of kibble Shock. Apparently the poos were spectacularly huge.

Despite her love of food, she was very trim right to the end.

GemmaTeller · 18/02/2015 10:22

Picky eater on the left, total scoffer on the right

Is your dog a graser or a scoffer?
swooosh · 18/02/2015 10:24

scoffer...Beagle! Grin she has a 'slow down' bowl but she's figured it out so I think a new one will soon be ordered.

Skivvywoman · 18/02/2015 10:27

When I was on the dry food he could be a grazer or a scoffer

But now on the wet food he's a scoffer!

He is a yorkie and all my other yorkies were grazers

fakenamefornow · 18/02/2015 10:28

Love that youtube link.

Mine is a grazer, picky too, but I don't always let her. I remove the food bowl after breakfast.

She is a lurcher, can see all ribs!

Don't think pointy hounds have it in them to overeat. If I put too much in her bowl, she just leaves it.

iseenodust · 18/02/2015 10:36

Lab - scoffer of anything. Though knows to sit and if he starts before second cup goes into the bowl he doesn't get that second cup.

Floggingmolly · 18/02/2015 10:41

Greyhound - big greedy scoffer!

wfrances · 18/02/2015 10:45

husky - scoffer
