Pet Insurance - premiums up 15% from 1st to 2nd year

Just wanted some advice. We have the Plus cover through John Lewis for one dog. Last year's premium was £195, this year it has gone up to £225. No claims have been made.

Does that sound normal - were we just on an introductory offer price?

I will phone them I think as they need to know our pup is now spayed.

sounds about right ours shot up too so i have moved to another company and have better cover for cheaper.

If I move to another provider do you know if I can take the lifetime cover with me? Again I'll clarify with them but wondered if anyone has any knowledge.

That sounds absolutely fine, just to shock you, my 10 year old newfoundlands insurance is now £200 PER MONTH!!!!!!! (because he is large and old!!! and lots of claims!!)

you're right, 225 a year is very reasonable compared to that!

Our Lab is £30 a month with PetPlan. It was £26~ the first year, but it was an introduction rate. So far we have claimed back our premiums due to a couple of overnight stays (gastro problems) so it has been worth it. But it does worry me what the premiums will be as he gets older. PetPlan do not increase cost with claims, but as with most pet insurance companies it does increase with age.

If you move company and have made any claims those conditions will be excluded from the new policy.

I thought that would make you feel better Pink! We nearly cancelled it when he got to nine, but left it, then he got bloat and it cost us 4 and a half grand (which insurance paid!). We won't renew it this time, as newfies lifespan is about 10 anyway! Good luck with it all xxx

I'm with John Lewis for one of mine and it increased about 40%+ between 1st and 2nd year! I'm currently unwaged so can take her to PDSA, but worry that if she did something like a cruciate (and she climbs trees and launches herself from 10ft in air / over 6 ft fences!) they'd refuse to pay for it and want to pts, so I've got insurance as back up, but if it continues to increase at such crazy rates without using it, then not sure how long I'll be able to afford it!
