Whistle training tips?

Just that really - sick of shouting against the wind on the beach so fancy training pup to at least recall to a whistle.
Considerations / tips please...

get total recall and work your way through it ...

basically your pup needs to connect the sound of the whistle to something really good so at first every time you feed him or give him a treat do two or three toots on the whistle

I've been using the whistle properly since September and dpup now turns on a sixpence when he hears it and races back to me at full pelt with a huge grin on his face - as he's very toy-motivated I now usually reward him with a game rather than food but we started with high value treats

I Had the Total Recall book and also saw this video on YouTube which made a lot of sense. I think the trick is to start with exceptionally tasty rewards - sausages,liver, roast beef etc, but it definitely works

Five dogs here, and it's very nice to call them all in from barking at the postman the garden with just a whistle instead of having to remember all the names!

We had the silliest Bedlington once. We used to call him Rocks for Brains, he was so dumb. I decided to whistle train him for recall. All I did every meal time was blow the whistle and put his bowl down. I did that for 1-2 weeks (he was a slow learner, lol) and then one day at the park he wandered too far away. I blew the whistle and he came running back to me like the wind. Amazing. He thought it was dinner time It was too cute.

Of course, make sure you have a lined pocket full of the highest value treats you can muster e.g. cheese, sliced hotdogs, chicken, or whatever most flats their boat.

Total Recall for me. Works beautifully. I've let things slip lately because he hasn't been off lead anywhere unfenced so we are startingTR back to basics next week.
