do dogs catch viruses like we do?

They do get viruses, but most are species specific so they catch them from other dogs not humans.

Unless you think your DS might have rabies?...

I think the only virus that transfers between dogs and humans is rabies? Normal human flu strains are zoonotic with other animals (birds, pigs etc) but I'm not aware of any dog ones.
