going through door before your dog

Lot people keep saying ideally i should go through door before the dog teaching it manners .Is it just people preference or is there some truth behind it

But as use a wheelchair I will need our dog to go through door before me so can see where he is thinking front/back door and when out )and no way we fitting through the door together with my power chair

I ask my dog to wait at the door and I go through first but that's nothing to do with 'asserting my leadership' bollocks just good manners - I don't want my dog rudely barging past people - and safety - I want to make sure there's nothing out there which could cause a problem (gives ddog a hard stare while thinking of the squirrel incident the other day )

I think most 'official' assistance dogs are trained to tuck in behind their owner's chair when there's not enough room to be alongside

I do it for manners and safety - dog is taught to only go through an outside door on my command and I hate the dog or the kids barging through a door in front of me, if I am standing at the door unlocking it - that's the theory anyway.
It doesn't matter though, you have to train your dog to suit you and your dog's needs....

As with the PPs, I do it only for politeness/safety. He's so eager to get outside/back home that he would forget his manners and barge past if I let him, and he's a big dog, so I ask him for a wait while I go first.

Lots of people, unfortunately, will be saying it to you because they believe that it will teach your dog his position in the pack, below you. Luckily we know that dominance and pack theory are completely dis-proven so if you need the dog to go in/out before you then just let him do so.

On the puppy programme the other week the assistance dog was being taught to go behind the wheelchair when going through doorways. I think there was a 'behind' command. Probably better than trying to get the dog to go first as you won't risk running over the dog's foot or making a dog go first in to a potentially worrying/unknown situation.

I go through first purely because my puppy refuses to believe the walk is truly over until I'm halfway down the hallway and call to him with a big smile and open arms. Nothing else will persuade him to come in.

I do the opposite to everyone else and send my lot through doorways (and up/down the stairs) first. It's just easier with four of them as if one of them breaks the 'wait' they'll all go and I'll get carried through on a wave of dog

If I'm going through a door and they're not I can just tell them to back up and wait so they don't go through.

I also send mine through first but she's elderly and if I told her to wait she would. It's just easier to get her out the way (in the nicest possible way).

Yes have had some spouting the pack theory .I ignored but wanted to check no other base for it

it is more at home and in and out my house am thinking of .Tbh behind I be more worried as my chair is rear wheel steer and swings wide at the back so would prefer to see where his paws were
I would like to get him to sit open door and then tell him to go through first .But expecting this to take quite a long time to learn in reality

We've taught our Yorkshire Terrier boy to wait and let us through the door first but if you need your dog to go in first because it's more convenient for you in your wheelchair then it's no one else's business. We only do it to reinforce his respect for us, his owners.

I have taught our to wait and go through on command, it depends on a combination of children I have with me, and if I am carrying groceries etc, what's happening on the street, if he goes in first, or waits til last

I've never given it a second thought and actually have no idea who goes first - didn't know it was a thing!

I insist on it with my mutt.partly as it teaches her not to knock people over in her eagerness for get out for a walk and because i think its a safer.no danger of her bolting through a strange door onto a road etc as she knows she has to wait. She now has the good manners to sit whining eagerly like a colied spring ready to be let off :p its a handy command.wait and ok go through. I can send her first but i prefer to have her learning a steady wait with a good reward for her obedience(walkies!)
