Oh how awful. Hard at any age but when they're so young you feel cheated as well as upset. Hope you can start to laugh at happy memories very soon. RIP Oscar, you were a much loved dog. x

Elmofan · 17/01/2015 22:34

Thank you Easy .. home alone tonight as Dh had to start back in work today after taking a week off to take oscar to & from the vets ...

I really feel for you. We had to have our yorkie put to sleep yesterday. He was nearly 14 and was suffering from kidney disease - he hadn't yet started suffering but he'd stopped eating and drinking and was only waking to go out to wee (and only then if we woke him) so it was time, before he started suffering too much. He was a tiny dog, but the hole he has left in our hearts and our lives is enormous. We are all really struggling - I had no idea it would be so hard. We have enjoyed looking at photos of him, and remembering some lovely times with him.

Sending you lots of hugs and best wishes.

writingbeagle · 17/01/2015 22:41

So sorry. He was so young too. Thinking of you.

Elmofan · 17/01/2015 22:45

Tkband3 - i am so sorry you lost your dog yesterday too x
we are still in shock as oscar was running around carefree up to 3 weeks ago . The first sign anything was wrong was he was gulping down water .. up to 5 bowls a day .. he went downhill so quickly ..spent 5 days in critical condition in the vets ..sent home on tuesday after they pumped lots of fluids into him . We had a lovely day with him on wednesday as he was alert and i got him to eat ( the first bit of food in 9 days) i thought he had turned a corner and would be ok ...only he took a turn for the worse on Thursday ..lost the use of his back legs and slept the whole day & night with loud groaning .. :(

Thank you all for the hugs x

Oh bless him Sad. Poor Oscar. No wonder you're still in shock. Benny had been ill since before Christmas, and although we were hoping we'd have longer with him, we knew it wouldn't be too long. He had cancer this time last year, which he overcame after three months of chemo, so in effect we've had a bonus year with him. Must be so hard for you as he was so young and things happened so quickly. Thinking of you.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/01/2015 23:20

I am so sorry. What a terrible shock to lose such a young dog in such a short time. It is so painful losing a much loved companion, do something nice for yourself this week, and take things easy, it does take a while to sink in. Eventually you will be able to remember all the lovely things about him without it being horribly painful, but dogs do get right into your heart.

ExitPursuedByABear · 17/01/2015 23:23

Sorry for your loss.

They steal your heart.

Elmofan · 17/01/2015 23:35

It was love at first sight with Oscar .. we were so proud to be his family . I lay beside him on thursday night rubbing his chest gently .. when i stopped for a second he placed his paw over my hand ..

The tears are non stop today and my heart is in my throat :(

Benny sounds like he was such a little fighter ..xx

Elmo and tk and Salem , love to you all.

We used to have two dogs. One died young (aged 6) and the other just died last year aged 14. Both left massive holes - the young one because so sudden and unexpected, and he could have lived twice as long; the older because she was there all day every day for so long, life seemed unimaginable without her. Both kinds of loss equally difficult.

Be kind to yourselves. I know what you mean about the house feeling empty. I have five kids, but when each dog died, it felt like the house was utterly bereft of life. You don't realise how much at the heart of a family a much loved dog is, until they're gone. We have a new pup but I still keep looking to my left on the sofa, where my old lady slept the past few years, and wondering where the hell she's gone.

basildonbond · 18/01/2015 09:20

I'm so sorry - far too young Sad

KiwiJude · 18/01/2015 22:02

Big hugs to Elmo, tk and Salem. Every time I read posts about pets dying I start blubbing for their families. It's just over 13 months since our darling boxer boy left us and I still miss him so much. We look at his pictures all the time, we talk about all the trips we took with him, the silly things he did; there are smiles among the tears too but the hole is still so big.

We too have a new pup in our lives. His arrival proved v stressful for me, and looking back if I had the choice to do over I wouldn't have got him. However, he is a part of the family now and well on his way to being a great dog :)

Grittzio · 18/01/2015 22:19

So sorry for your loss, they leave a massive gap, take care of yourself and remember Oscar was part of your family, its's ok to grieve and if people don't understand it's because they don't get what having a dog is all about. I still well up over my beloved lab and she left us over a year ago.

spiderlight · 19/01/2015 10:18

So very sorry. It's awful, isn't it? we lost our beloved Megan four weeks ago today so my heart truly goes out to you. Oscar was clearly a very, very dearly loved boy and you did all you could for him.

Elmofan · 19/01/2015 12:24

Thank you all so so much for your support , it really means a lot to talk to people who understand xx
I don't have a lot of friends , built my life around my family and i can not believe how much i miss Oscar .. I miss just getting home after the school run to have him greet me at the door , waiting to get his breakfast with me then go for our walk . Coming home this morning knowing he wouldn't be there was heartbreaking .
I cant get past this lump in my throat and constant ache in my heart.
I'm going through stages of anger that up until Thursday we were led to believe there was further treatments and hope .. only to say goodbye to him on Friday morning :(

I am so sorry that you have all gone through this too , I really hope all our loved pets are in a happy place playing together x
