Eye cleaning

My cockapoo often has sleep by the corner of his eyes. How should I clean them? Or shouldn't I?

Damp cotton wool. Separate piece for each eye. If it is persistent and plentiful check with the vet for possible eye issues (blocked tear duct etc)

Thanks. I worry it will hurt him as it is matted into his fur.
