Last night I though I could hear something and this morning my bin was tipped over and the bin bag and the rubbish all over the garden.I thought it was the wind.

I sent DD out to put something in the bin and she told me that there was a dog outside it sniffing by the bin. When it saw her it wagged its tail. I went out and there was a dog. It came wandering up to me and snuffled my hand. I got some ham and bribed it inside.

It is now in my kitchen I have given it some water and another bit of ham. It is very thin and looks like a Labrador cross with something.

Do I need to do something special with it tonight. I will take it to the vets tomorrow to check it over. It's a lovely sweet dog and it wags its tail when the DCs sneak past me to look at it through the doors.

Report to the police. We had a dog brought in to work last week. I called the Police, it had been reported lost and dog and owner were reunited an hour later.

Yes I will give the rescues a call layer when the younger DCs are in bed to see if it has been reported missing.

Called the police and they came round to look at her. No one has reported her so I will take her to the vets tomorrow to check her over.
The younger DCs are in bed so we have let her out the kitchen and she is sitting with her head on my knees.

Took her to the vets and she wasn't microchipped and she is very underweight. The vets have called the other vets in the area and the police know she is here but no-one has come forward yet. We have checked all the local lost dog pages but we haven't found her owner yet.

I have said we will keep her here till her owners come forward or we know more as rescues struggle so much this time of year.
The vets have given us special food for her to get her weight up a bit.

Thank you for being kind to a lost animal. My own dog came from a rescue organisation, and I'm so glad someone did the right thing by her.

Aw well done you. If she's very very thin she's obviously been away from a home environment for some time so am hoping you get to keep her. What a lovely Christmas story!

The vet was great and borrowed us a lead because the one we had was from our old dog who was much smaller.
It's not much trouble for us to take her for now we are having a quite Christmas anyway so she doesn't disturb us too much.

She is a lovely girl she seems very good with the DCs too so I am more than happy to look after her till her owners turn up.

Did you know that stray dogs are no longer the responsibility of the police?

By law, strays must be reported to your local council, they are then seized for 7 days, which gives their owner an opportunity to find them. After this 7 days, they can be put up for adoption - sometimes the 'finder' is able to arrange for the dog to become theirs legally, at this point.

It wasn't clear from your posts, whether the council have been involved. I just wanted to let you know they are meant to be notified. If you were to become attached and want to keep her, she'd remain the property of the previous owner unless this procedure is followed. Unfortunately, this means they could claim her from you at anytime in the future.
