Please can I get some feeding advice for our puppy?

Woody is 3 mon the old. The breeder gave us a feeding guide of
Handful of kibble for breakfast
Scrambled egg for lunch
Handful of kibble for dinner
Lactol for supper (one scoop powder to two scoops water).
We are still doing this but they breeders kibble has run out and we are now using James Wellbeloved puppy turkey and rice.
According to their website, at Woody's age and with an average adult weight of 12 kilos he should be fed 208 gsm of JWB biscuits every day.
I've just weighed the amount I've been giving him for breakfast and dinner and it's about 25 g. Any idea how much the egg (large) equates to?
Am I under feeding do you think?
And for how long will he need four meals a day please?

I was feeding my pup 3 times a day at 12 weeks. Not less food though. Why does he need the lactol?

I would say he needsmore kibble. I gave kibble and a small amount of wet sachet food

Our puppy is about 10-12kg (expected to reach 25-30kg as an adult) and going to be 4 months on christmas day. He gets 375g of JWB a day spread across 3 meals. We add a bit of warm water to make it smell nicer. 25g seems like a tiny amount per serving!
Has your puppy been to the vets recently? If he's the right weight then there may not be any problems but if his calories are coming from treats and/or the puppy milk then he might not be getting the proteins etc that he needs to develop properly.

Thanks for the post. We were at the vets about 10 days ago and he was very complimentary about Woody Smile.
We use kibble as treats/rewards, or banana. Occasionally cheese.

If I am under feeding and he's hungry, could that be why he's biting? Or just a horrid coincidence?

He might be hungry, but he will be teething soon. Give him a carrot!

carrot? A whole one kilmuir? Will I get bits of carrot all over the floor? I don't mind but I just might restrict it to a certain area Smile

I raw feed but the kibble amount you are giving does sound a small amount.

If you want to feed kibble I would now move to 3/4 meals a day and increase the kibble amount.

It is best to weigh it out and then use kibble for treats from the daily amount. I would go with the amount recommended by JWB but keep an eye on your puppies weight.

I don't think the biting has anything to do with the amount you are feeding - it could be the additives etc in the kibble but to be honest biting is a very normal puppy behaviour at this age.

Scramble eggs is great for very young puppies but your dog does not need soft food at this age.

Thank you both.
I do have raw food in the freezer ( I got a puppy starter pack as a gift when the puppy arrived).
I've just not started him on it as I've yet to find out if there is a minimum age at which to start plus I was following the breeders guidelines.

With the raw carrot, do I need to be around when he has it so I take it away after a certain time or is it somehting I can leave him with in the crate when I go out?

Yes. You are under feeding by quite a lot.

He doesn't need the egg or the milk. He is on a reasonable quality balanced puppy food.

Start by immediately replacing the egg with kibble - work towards 75g ish per meal.

Drop the milk a few days in.

Carrots are a fun diversion for a puppy but they won't increase his calorie intake. At 12 weeks, a bit of a carrot will keep him happy for a few minutes and they are good for their teeth too.

I expect he is a very hungry puppy, and that may well account for some frantic biting.

I increased breakfast and lunch to 45 g and I'll gently increase further.
What about the lactol?

I raw fed from almost the moment I got Dpup home at 10weeks - he wasn't too keen on kibble...ever, and was underweight. I only fed him from a bowl once a day, the rest of his food I feed while training.

I fed around 10% of body weight initially and pretty much stuck with that amount - as he grew older he needed a lower percentage - so at 10-12 weeks that was 400 - 500g of meat, around 200g of that was cooked for training treats and that is roughly what I feed him now at 6 months. Somedays he seems ravenous and we feed him more on those days...he's a healthy weight, even a bit skinny, so obesity has never been a concern for us.

Yes he should be fine with the carrot to be left alone. I've never supervised my pup when he has carrot. Cocktail sausages and peanut butter frozen into a kong is very popular with him too
