I need soft food like tinned that produces firm poos

Dog with end stage liver failure - he's not managing the Vets Kitchen stuff which he loves usually and will only eat soft food like sausages/liver.

I don't want to give him that constantly as it produces very soft diarrhoea that distresses him - he ate his normal dried Vets Kitchen yesterday and it produced normal firm poo.

He's not fancying it today. What's pedigree chum or their ilk like? I've never fed soft food

I'd avoid pedigree and ones like that if possible...there are some decent wet foods though.

From supermarkets, butcher's tripe mix is ok or chappie is better than some others.

If you can go to pets at home, nature diet or wainwrights (plastic trays not tins) are pretty good quality.

None of them should result in loose stools after the initial change in diet... But any wet food might for a day or two just because it's different.

Thanks for that, I've got a Pets at Home close by - so I will go for the wainwrights type - I literally couldn't think of any wet food type at all

You can mix wet and dry food btw, so you can stick some of his normal food in it too. (If it's an appetite issue not a chewing one)

Also you can microwave wainwrights in the tray for 30 seconds or so to bring it up to body temperature...that helps increase appetite sometimes.

I feed my dog a mix of Barking Heads kibble and Lilys kitchen wet trays , he also has the Applaws chicken trays ,neither affect the quality of his stools .

Forthglade is also a good wet food. Available at Pets at Home.

I'd avoid Nature Diet at the moment, as they seem to be having some quality issues.

Lily's Kitchen wet good is good stuff.

I'm using Forthglade in my dogs' kongs at the moment and that seems to be going down well as a change from their usual sardines in tomato sauce. They're having the chicken and tripe mix, which is good for keeping weight on over the winter and also kind to the stomach (assuming your dog is ok with chicken).

I'm buying mine from Vet UK - cheaper than PAH and generally 24/48 hour delivery at most.

When our old boy was in late stage heart failure he also went off dry food and he did really well on the Wainwrights salmon and potato. It used to only come in tins but I've had a look on their website and I think it's available in trays instead now.

Zooplus do some really good European brands of wet food in some really interesting flavours. We use Rocco Classic at the moment and the dogs go mad for it, especially any of the varieties with heart in.

Couldn't you try the old trick of adding hot water and mashing it up a bit?
