End stage liver thingy - I'm heartbroken :(((

My lovely dog has liver failure. Function tests are awful and his spleen/gall bladder are covered in masses. His liver looks horrible on screen, all dark and abnormal.

He has been my constant shadow since we adopted him and he would be 14 in February.

I don't know what to do but the vet said the moment his quality of life reaches that point to bring him in - he ate his dinner today because I encouraged him by mixing it with pate.

He's still like a total puppy in his head Sad
Bounces up then realises his body doesn't do it.

I lost my favourite cat (his best friend) this week last year and I just cried for days - now he's going Im just bereft.

He's lying next to me now wondering why mummy gave him ham when he's had a healthy diet his whole life til the last couple of days.

I love him so much

Laurie, I'm so sorry for your loss and hope you are feeling better today. Take care.

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and words, they really are comforting. One of my favourite things about Mumsnet is how loved our furry creatures are on here - there is so much understanding about the love we feel for them.

He went very peacefully at the vets last night, surrounded in cuddles by me and DH.

It's so quiet here, I can't believe how empty the house feels.

One last photo of his lovely face on Sunday night (before the distressing diarrhoea, disorientation and 2am bath)

:(
Again, so so sorry Laurie.
I'm glad he went peacefully with those who love him.

What a lovely boy he was.
Take care Xx

Aww Laurie is he a spaniel? My old boy was a working cocker. Have you got any more dogs, or will you have another dog?

I can't bear the empty house either. I miss having a dog and I miss his little character too. He knew all our ways and we knew his. I miss him so much.

There are a lot of people on here who appreciate how you feel. Especially lately, unfortunately. It's a shit time for it as well. Really not enjoying the run up to Christmas and usually I love it. Feels wrong to be looking forward to something and feeling happy when he's not here anymore.

Hope you're ok. Flowers

Totally agree with msadorabelle.
Hopefully in the spring, we'll feel like welcoming a new dog into our home.
Just can't live without a dog.
I hope you and your family feel better before too long.

You too atonofwashing? Sad

I'll look out for you on the boards in the spring. The ones where we worry about getting the right breed and then tear our hair out over the naughty puppy.

Will you join us Laurie?

atonofwashing · 17/12/2014 12:44

Yes, msadorabelle, three weeks ago this evening we had to put our adored girl to sleep. We miss her terribly, but we had no choice. She was so old and had nothing left to give.

But, really excited at the prospect of a new furry friend in our lives. And sharing all the chaos they bring!

Laurie, I hope u do too.

Merry Christmas everyone, and a happier 2015 to all of u who have lost your best friends recently.
Xx
