Calm dog turned nuts.....

Hi. dogonthehill is a Springer Spaniel....not known for their quiet nature I know! but she is...gentle, quiet and calm. 2 hours of exercise per day plus the occasional short out if she wants to come with me....seldom alone but crate trained and happiest in there if I am out.

Yesterday had long walk in horrid rain...would not settle for a few hours after we came back, but eventually calmed and slept through the night. Miserable cold wet 2 hour exercise this morning...obviously trying to settle calm and sleep but keeps jumping up circling, wandering and generally being a pain in the neck. She has even jumped up on sofas (never allowed) and tried to go upstairs with me (ditto).

Anyone ever experienced this? It's like she's on speed.

She is a 7 ish year old rescue dog, had 2 litters before she came to us, had op 2 years ago. Had vet check 1 month ago and jabs.

Has finally curled up on the cold hard kitchen floor 3 hours after our walk but if I twitch a muscle she's up and off again.

Not settling could be an indication of pain? Perhaps she is starting to get arthritic and the cold, wet walks have exacerbated it a little?

Has she been showing any signs at all? Mild intermittent lameness? A little stiff getting up when she has been asleep? Reluctance to get on sofa/into car? Some increased exercise intolerance?

No signs of stiffness at all, very lively and mobile out of the house. Still her usual idiot spaniel self...only the indoor behaviour has changed. Eating well. Seems like she's expecting something/someone. In past has been like this if she hears guns or fireworks. I think she was a failed working gun dog (very excited by tractors and guns!) who probably was too distractable to be successful.

Her normal self would contentedly sleep by my feet (carpet) or in her bed until her internal clock says 3pm when she reminds me it's time to do the school run.

So I'm guessing she's just nuts then.........in keeping with her lineage.

she finally flopped at 6pm and hasn't roused herself since...........

Do keep an eye on her. Our terrier behaved similarly one day and we had no idea why until the next day she became acutely unwell with colitis - the behaviour was because of her discomfort and pain. Hope yours is ok.

Hope your terrier pulled through

She's fine now thanks - but was extremely ill at the time and we spent a few days preparing for the worst. We have to be v careful with her diet. How is your dog? Has the odd behaviour stopped?
