Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of update, I have had a bit of a mad evening.
Mabli is now settling Into her foster home safely. Lots of food has been eaten and she has discovered that her foster carer has pockets with sausages in so adores her foster carer ;-)

We have had a good look at her and think she has a few days left yet, pups are nice and active and she still has a bit of room, and although she is 'bagged up' nicely there isn't any milk there as yet. This is ideal as it gives her foster mum time to get to know her and gain her trust which is essential if she needs help in labour.

She is in very good condition- gorgeous bull lurcher. Probably a travellers dog or dumped working dog - although she doesn't seem to have the working scars you would expect.

Thank you and well done to Hounds. She came to you for help and you helped her which is fab. Others would have turned a blind eye or would have called the Rspca who would have put the pups down at birth due to their breeding. So thank you for saving her and the pups.

Thank you to all of you who have donated and bought things off of the wish list. It really is appreciated and makes our job so much easier. Being a small charity we are always struggling for funds and rearing pups correctly is expensive so thank you so much.

I'm glad to hear its all going well :)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 24/10/2014 09:18

Morning Rachel

That's brilliant news, had just been catching up with what was happening on FB, she looks really settled (though it must have been a very confusing few days for her) and is certainly in the right place, sausages in pockets? She must be in heaven.

Glad she's got a few days to go, she's an extremely friendly girl so will no doubt bond well with her foster mum before the pups arrive.

I'm so thrilled for her, DD was very excited to see her in her new home this morning and we're all rooting for her and the pups and now it's not me that's going to be looking after them, I'm betting seven!

Oh, and for those asking about my leg, I'm glad I listened to the exhortations to get myself to the doctor's with haste, by the time I went in the afternoon it had swelled up quite alarmingly as had the gland in my groin & had a temperature, so a raging infection there - had a tetanus and got a course of antibiotics, and am feeling a little under the weather today, but I'll pull through.

So that's the thanks I get from the cat for saving its bacon - bloody ingrate. (They have forgiven me though and were flanking me on the sofa when I came back from the GP's).

Ouch! I hope you feel better soon x

EasyToEatTiger · 24/10/2014 13:31

Ouch. You poor thing. I was bitten by a dog years ago and my wrist did what your leg has done. I have had soooo many tetanus jabs, the doc says I'm set for life. Hope you feel better soon. You have done a brilliant job with the pregnant bitch. Well done you! What a lucky girl she is. I hope the next stage goes well. I'm sure you'll keep everyone updated when you hear!!

nooka · 24/10/2014 16:07

Poor Hound! Sounds like Mabli will do very well with her Foster carer and lovely that rachmultiplemum can give us updates.

333 messages is a lot to read but was so worth it - much better than reading a magazine or watching TV! All the posters who helped with advice on here are incredible, and OP, I think you should be so proud of yourself, you've ensured this lovely girl is safe, dry and warm and happy - best of luck to her in the whelping! I expect I'm not the only one who is excited to see whichever of her puppies you bring home! :)

CatWitch · 24/10/2014 22:43

Helen, many blessings upon you for lovely care you gave Mabli. So sorry you had to get a bit of a bang up for your troubles! My heart is full for this special dog and the amazing people helping her bring her puppies into a safe, warm world. Xx

CatWitch · 24/10/2014 22:44

Oh Dear, I meant to address my post to Hound and managed to type Helen instead??would like to blame it on my brimming eyes...

rachmultiplemum · 25/10/2014 18:03

Mabli is keeping is on our toes... WE thought she was going to start whelping last night and then as we started getting excited she fell asleep.

She has had some more clear discharge today and pups are wriggling lots. Still eating like a horse though!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 25/10/2014 18:07

Aww, c'mon Mabs!

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/10/2014 18:12

Aw just look at her. Come on we want puppies Smile

Itsfab · 25/10/2014 18:22

Warms my heart there still are good people in the world when all we seem to hear about is the bad.

I cried buckets that the lady who tried to resuscitate the Canadian soldier told him he was loved, he was brave and thanked him for his service, and that she hopes his parents took comfort in the fact he didn't die alone.

Apologies for ridiculous topic change.

As I was just on the Hounds page, here are the links

www.facebook.com/HoundsFirstSighthoundRescue
www.justgiving.com/mabli
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/ls/ref=aw_wl_lol_gl?ie=UTF8&lid=3OB0HPSJVVSCG

So you can give to the center, or send specific things to Mabli's foster mum via Amazon. I'm feeling totally overinvested!

rachmultiplemum · 26/10/2014 07:40

Morning all, Mabli here. Still 'fat' but making the most of being waited on. The food is great here!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 26/10/2014 08:28

Aw, bless her. She looks like how I felt at the end of my pregnancies!

CatWitch · 26/10/2014 15:45

Bless, so happy this mum to be is safe, warm and fed.

ditavonteesed · 26/10/2014 16:24

such a lovely lady, and such a gorgeous story, glad Mabli is in safe hands.

spiderlight · 26/10/2014 17:06

She looks as if she's settled in really well, and check out those boobies! It won't be long now Grin

nooka · 26/10/2014 18:09

She is enormous isn't she! So glad to think of her in a nice warm house, with all the creature comforts she needs and being cared for by someone with whelping experience. It all could have been so different if Hounds hadn't opened her house and heart to her.

Can't wait to see the pups, but I'm sure the longer Mabli has to relax and eat before they arrive the better.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 26/10/2014 18:45

Ohh, so nice to see her like that, I'll never forget her turning up at my back door, wagging her tail like crazy and giving me her best submissive grin (which is clearly a winning smile as she's been transported to doggie heaven), it feels a little bit empty without her here even though she was only with us for a few days she took up a lot of 'space' in our hearts and on the sofa eventually (yes, I crumbled on that one).

Have been obsessively checking for pup news, feels like I'm about to be a granny, just hoping all goes well with her and it's just so lovely how so many people have taken her to their hearts, I've even had friends from Australia donating to her fund, so she's gone from an abandoned stray to a much loved dog with international cheering team in the space of a week. The girl done good.
