Clueless veggie's question about bones

soddinghormones · 06/10/2014 15:14

I'd like to get ddog (14 month old Toller, not massively string chewer) the odd bone or two but don't know what to ask for

I know the cooked ones sold in pet shops are a no-no but if I go into a butcher's shop and ask for a bone for my dog will they give me something appropriate?

Bones must be raw, never give your dog a cooked bone or they can splinter and be more brittle, causing your dog to choke. Raw bones with marrow in are good for dogs Smile my lab loves them for a treat every once in a while and she has lovely teeth from chewing bones!

So if I ask for a raw marrow bone I won't get given anything unsafe?? How much should I expect to pay and how big should it be? Ddog is about the size of an English springer

(Lifelong veggie so have never been into a butcher's )

You just go in and ask for a couple of bones for a dog...mine give them away and charge about a pound a kilo for things like chicken carcasses or lamb ribs and necks.

But because I don't eat meat I always feel awkward about it as well and either but something for DP or things like eggs that they also sell, lol.

Most butchers will sell you chicken carcasses, lamb ribs or chicken wings. Avoid heavy weight-bearing bones like cow/beef bones as they are too dense and can chop dog's teeth. I got some lamb ribs today (didn't buy anything else!) and will go back on Fri as he will have chicken carcasses by then. Your dog will love them!

*chip teeth - not chop!

TooOldForGlitter · 06/10/2014 19:12

I feel a bit clueless about bones from the butcher too! My dog is raw Fed but I tend to order his bones from the food supplier as I know what I'm getting then. That and buy chicken quarters from aldi. Our local butcher sells big bags of 'marrow bones', very cheaply, but I've never bought them coz I don't know what bones they are, and if they'd be OK, ie not chip his teeth!

soddinghormones · 07/10/2014 07:52

Am really confused now Confused marrow bones - yes or no? Is it ok if he eats things like ribs completely?? Are knuckle bones ok? How big a bone would I be looking at?

Btw, I'm not planning to raw feed completely, just give him a bone once or twice a week

Haha! I'm another veggie who has to brave the butchers for bones for my dog. i'm sure they've sussed me out and think I'm weird. I just ask for dog bones and see what I get. Some places just get you to put a donation in the tin, but my local butcher charges me £1 a bone! I took my supermodel weimaraner with me last time and the butcher was so enamoured with her he gave her half a pelvis!! ShockShock
