Hi,

We are picking up our puppy in mid November (so excited!) and we are just trying to get everything sorted and ready. We were wondering what peoples experiences of the 'Healthy Pet Club' are and if they are worth it?

I have to flog a similar scheme at work and, to be honest, I don't think they're usually worth the money. Better to leave the monthly payments to a good quality insurance provider for lifetime cover and then stump up the cash for an annual booster and as much flea/worm control as you really need. I certainly don't use a product every month, nor would I feed any of the veterinary diets so wouldn't benefit from discounts there.

Many vets will have separate puppy schemes/offers anyway - ours has a fixed price for vaccs/first flea and worm product/microchip and that comes with vouchers for money off neutering, food loyalty scheme etc. and our nurse consults are always free anyway.

Come on then, what flavour is the puppy?!

That's great to hear toboldlygo (love the name btw), as they were our initial thought on it too. It's reassuring to hear that we are not being blinded by not considering it!

The puppy is a black male Newfoundland :) gone to a well respected breeder as we have a 4 year old and a 4 month old, so while we always thought we'd get a rescue dog, with the kids we want the reassurance of knowing the mum and dad, history, temperament etc- we must be bleeding mad lol!

I like the idea of them, and if I didn't work in a vets already I'd probably take it up. Mainly because I prefer to spread out payments rather than pay a lump sum, and a box of advocate costs a small fortune too. I do flea and worm mine regularly. I guess if you were an organised person you could just put money aside - but I'm not of of those!

Ours isn't a con at all, but it is preventative treatments only, then discounts from other stuff. Insurance isn't included like it is in some, in which case I would read the small print very carefully!

I have a pet plan with my vet ( independent not chain) , I use advocate monthly and with the plan I effectively get free vaccinations including KC ,10% off of other things like blood tests ,food and X-rays etc . The vets is also involved in a local point scheme ( like a nectar point thing) and you get money off with so many points . I think the schemes are good if you know that you will be happy with the vet ,I've been using the same vet for over 30 yrs - I'm a happy client.
