Flea treatments are firmly in the buy cheap buy twice category.
Products that are over the counter are old products, all the newer and most effective products are prescription only. The prescription market had three new products in the last 6 months.

Okay. Why are they prescription though?

Don't bother with frontline, my vets won't even sell it any more.

I have had a lot of luck with stronghold, advantage and advocate.

We used Comfortis tablets monthly and have now moved on to Trifexis,it has the same active ingredient against fleas as Comfortis but it does worms as well and though not licenced for treating lungworm it has the same active ingredient in as Milbemax which is licenced. (Important for us as our labs will eat anything including snails from the garden!)
It is prescription only but I think it's worth it as it's more effective than the spot ons and a lot easier to treat our dogs with.

They are prescription only as not all of them are suitable for every pet and should be prescribed by an individual who has that patient under their care and is aware of any other medical problems and treatments being used.
Several of them are also novel technologies and these are always restricted by the regulators to monitor their use.
